    Water Pump blues....

So as some of you know I got a 2006 GSX-R 750. This past spring the water pump started leaking oil. I jumped on the Gixxer forum (yes I know) and I found some actually pretty useful threads on this exact problem. I guess it's a very common problem on my bike. Basically my research led me to the point where I had to replace part # 5, 8 and 9. http://www.oneidasuzuki.com/store/pa...0-2006-07.html. I own a repair manual for my bike so I followed the directions exactly how the book stated and made sure everything was properly torqued when I was putting the pump back together.

Well the pump is still leaking oil. I went back to the gixxer forum (yes I know again) and they said that it's probably the mechanical seal that is worn out (part# 4) and try to replace that. Ok here's where the dilema comes in.

    1) In order to replace part #4 you need a specialized Suzuki tool and when I did a search or it, it came up being anywhere from $600-800+. Yea F that.

    2) People were saying to buy a new water pump assembly. That's only good if you have the specialized tool because online vendors send you the pump completely apart so you still need the specialized too.

    3) I could buy a used (assembled) pump off ebay for cheap money but it's used and I run the risk of that pump failing in the near future. Feel more comfortable putting on new parts.

So I'm kind of at a point where I'm not sure what else to do. I could go to a stealership and have them do it but the problem with that is I dont need to pay a shop hundreds of dollars to replace the pump when I can do it blindfolded. Do you guys think the stealership's could order me a pump and then put the pump together for me and then I take the pump home and actual do the swap? If you guys got any other ideas or advise, let me know!

Dealership should be able to put a new seal in your water pump using there took without an issue.

If you're getting oil and you put a new oil seal in, check the condition of your shaft. Either it's worn or the oil seal was damaged during install or not installed properly. #4, the mechanical seal is to keep water from going anywhere, it's never supposed to see or seal against oil, that's #5's job.

Where are you seeing the oil leak BTW?

    Re: Water Pump blues....

The oil is leaking behind the water pump in the location of where the water pump inserts into the engine. Kind of like in the area of part #9.

You can clearly see #9, if you go a little bit closer to the side of the pump, that is the area where I'm wiping up oil when I stuff a shop towel behind there.

So since I'm getting oil leaking in that location, my assumption is #9 isn't doing it's job and causing oil to seep by which is why I'm getting oil to leak in that location? #5 is internal to the pump so if that wasn't doing it's job how would the oil leak outside the bike? Little confused on that.

    Re: Water Pump blues....

Waterpumps usually have a weep/telltale hole underneath them as a way of warning about impending leaks. The hole leads up into the pump in a spot between the mechanical seal and oil seal where there should never be any fluid. Oil is retained by the oil seal on one side, water by the mechanical seal on the other. If you get oil out of the hole, it's the oil seal failing. If you get water, it's the mechanical seal, etc. If the oil ISN'T coming out of that telltale, then I agree, oring #9 or the mating surfaces there are the culprit.

    Kurlon,

Didn't know about the weep hole. I guess that explains why I could be leaking oil from #5. Speaking of #5 there's a huge mystery surrounding that part. Check this out. I posted this on another forum:

    Guys,

I finally got around to ripping the water pump apart today but I came across something rather odd and was hoping someone could assist.

So I went to bike bandit and ordered #5 which is part # 1528730:
    http://www.bikebandit.com/2006-suzuk...m9756sch509447

Now my packing slip and the actual package the part came in appears to be correct when you compare it to the website:
    http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/a...2/IMG_0496.jpg

But when I compare the old part to the new part they are different (white washer gets inserted into the part I took out of the bike. Didn't include it in the pic for some reason):
    http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/a...2/IMG_0494.jpg

Also as a side note I noticed on the BikeBandit Schematic the white washer like part and the original rubber seal in the third link is not in the schematic.... If you zoom in really close, you can clearly see it's now the part that got sent to me. The only thing I can think of is they changed the design of this part ?

The seal you were sent is a better design, no worries there.

    Re: Water Pump blues....

Gotcha. That's what I was hoping. What do you think I should try next? Some of the guys on gixxer.com said after replacing #5, #8 and #9 and the oil continued to leak they just got a whole new water pump assembly and it solved the problem once and for all. If I go that route I want to buy it brand new but I need it assembled which brings me back to my original dilemma. But if Cory is right I could have a stealership order me one up and they put it together?

    Re: Water Pump blues....

First step is determining where the leak is, that'll tell you how to fix. Figure out if it's the o-ring or the seal.

    Re: Water Pump blues....

Is it possible you nicked the #9 o-ring while installing it? That's where it's leaking from your description. That o-ring should be lubed with white grease or or the like before installing the pump back in the bike to keep from damaging it.

I did grease the oring before inserting back into bike. Repair manual called for it so I followed the directions.

Don't take no manual to tell ME to lube an o-ring.

    Re: Water Pump blues....

Ok so I decided to call GBM (Greater Boston Motorsports) because I don't want to keep messing around with the original water pump because everytime I take it out I waste coolant and oil which is getting expensive and wasteful.

I called GBM and explained the situation to them and they verified that when you order the pump assembly (the whole thing), it comes assembled. If they are wrong and it shows up in pieces the service deparment can put it together for me so I'm not totally screwed. GBM is guessing when I spoke to the operator of the online vendor, the person probably knew nothing about bikes and was just hired to direct phone calls.

They even went ahead and asked me what I'm seeing for a price online + shipping, told them and they beat it by a buck. Thought that was cool of them. They also signed me up for email notifications so when my part comes in I'll be notified via email. Overall a very helpful parts department. Maybe not all dealerships are bad??????????

    Re: Water Pump blues....

Honestly I HATE dealerships, I avoid them like the plague and do all the work myself or ask fellow NESRians for help. GBM parts department was extremely helpful as you can see. Guy even said I want to get your future business so if you need something please give me a chance to compete. Never had that kind of experience before. Kudos to GBM!!!!

    Re: Water Pump blues....

Well I discovered the leak is coming from the "wheep hole" and not the oring from the crankcase. Anyways I slapped on a new water pump and filled her back up with fluids. Fingers crossed!
