    Wont stay in neutral?

I got a call from a fellow racer last night and he had a question I couldn't answer and thought this would be a good place to share it.
He had a crash in turn three on the first weekend. Fixed the bike and raced last weekend (3) races. on the last race the chain broke. When he brought the bike back in to the paddock he mocked up the chain to see what happend and the bike wouldn't stay in neutral.
When you move the bike/tire about 1/2 turn it pops out of neutral into gear...

Any idea why this would happen?

This is on a 1st gen SV.

    Thanks

Simple. It's not in neutral. It's probably still between 2nd and 3rd. That's how it will behave in mid-shift.

More to the point. I find it disturbing that a chain should break on a race bike.

If not this, could it be the detent spring for the stopper arm for the shifter mechanism? Do those go in these bikes?

    Makes sense, simple it is.

Rivited chains are the way to go. He had a master link and didn't safety wire it so it didn't technically "break".. it made its way apart.

Oh. That's pretty rare when they are on the right way around but that makes sense. If a rivet link chain split apart I'd be pretty amazed.

It could be the detent mechanism not working right and that would be caused by the shift shaft getting bent in the crash.

Not to start a chain debate, but what kind of chain was he using? I'm just curious.

And none of the bikes in any garages near us have their master link safety wired. I'm actually replacing my chain this week & don't plan on using safety wire.

Jim. You only safety wire clip links.

you gotta be specific here man. safety wire clip type master links. rivet type masters don't need anything after you rivet them.

Jim I have an EK MVXZ on my bike. pretty happy with it. got it from Superbikesupply.com
