ZX-7R Speedometer Compatibility with other bikes

    Hi,

Another Issue with my bike. My Speedometer in broken. I opened the whole assembly and the Speedometer does not rotate at all. Costed me two speedo cables!

The original OEM part is $147 online and almost the same with the dealer. I am not spending that much on the speedo. I looked at Ebay and did find one fro ZX-7 and might get it. However there are cheaper options for the entire Gauge assembly but for ZX-9R and other bikes from the same year. I tired to look online which bikes does the part number fit but it shos only ZX-7R for various years.

Will other speedometers from bikes like ZX-9R fit?

Does anyone here have that part?

$147 for a speedo isn't that bad. Over the winter I am going to throw a set of Koso gauges on my bike and they are about $380

If you want a direct bolt on replacement, then I don't think the 9R will match up with bolt holes etc.

I'm sure you already know that all 7R s from 96-03 are exactly the same.

Yup I know! Second generation of the 7R. I saw the back of the 9R assembly. Although the bolts would match, it has electronic speed sensor and I have mechanical cable. So would not work. I just have to replace the speedometer. Will keep the original assembly.

BTW where do you park your bike at night?

thanks Chuck for the website links

I thought the 94-97 ZX9R speedos would interchange with the 96-03 ZX7R speedos but I could be wrong, should look into that.

The stock speedometer is almost useless. I bet it reads more than 5% high. Ratehr than replace it, why not install a bicycle speedometer? They are cheap, and when calibrated (which is really easy) extremely accurate. Alternatively, a GPS shows speed with accuracy too and with mapping software, you have a pretty slick toy to play with. I imagine you can find one for less than a new speedometer. It'll also have a backlight, something a bicycle speedometer will likely lack.

I was looking at that option but I think they will be a little small. I might use a Bicycle speedometer on the side.

I do have a GPS but do not have the Handle mount. I use the suction cup. Also loading the Mapsource for Gamin is a PITA. I think I have lost the CD when I moved and was trying to download the original software from various website but a full day work did not turn anything good. I gave up on that. Although if I do get that thing going, it would be awesome. I would then need a Handle Mount and install a power socket on the bike.

Ordered a used Speedoemeter from a 1994 ZX-7R and should get it this week.

I would have held out if I were you. 91-95 are amber lit and will not match your tach. Speedo's are easy to come by on Ebay and wreckers... Did you try breaking the malfunctioning one apart to see if you could dianose the issue. Are you sure you connected the sending unit on the front wheel correctly...there is a snap ring to contend with.
