    771 Racing - Brain Download

    Brain Dump - November 2018 — OutOfSpec.COM

Yup, I'm going to do the odd thing, all those who are surprised, raise your hands. Anyone, anyone? To answer the obvious question, no the 300XC-W I sold would not be what I would have started with. I'll cover that detail later.

Interesting read.. Wish I had the balls the share my thoughts on line like that! I am already spending money I don't have on bikes!!
The FZR is going to be your bike.. Its legal for USCRA ( they race at Loudon and Canaan) I believe and Ahrma has a new light weight class for it. (NJ is the closest track) The Wera broad has a project bike up for sale! You might want to check that out.. The Kramer would be ideal but cost is the killer on that one... I get your feelings on the SV... Good luck!

Re: 771 Racing - Brain Download

I like most of the people in the USCRA, but damn if there isn't a grumpy old clique that thinks anything other than 50s Brittish iron is junk and shouldn't be in the club... Plus it's a LOT of money for not much track time. Which is too bad 'cause like I said, I like everyone else in that group. I'll have to look at AHRMA's rules, last I looked I'm way over the displacement limit but they might have tweaked things.

On the WERA project bike, there's been a couple for sale recently but they are US 1WGs, different animal from my 3TJ, if I'm doing a full chassis change over I'm going to call it a day on the bike.

You could always destroke your 600...and make it an R5 the Ahrma class is new LW https://www.ahrma.org/rules/next-gen...rules-writeup/

A destroked piggie 600 is still a piggie, just slower. The AHRMA rules match what I remember, where I run afoul is in the engine dept, way past 2mm overbore, and I'd be hard pressed to argue that my cylinder / head / cam / etch changes don't offer any performance increases. I run into similar concerns with the USCRA, because I'm using some later parts my machine doesn't necessarily fit the 'sprit' of the class.

One platform in particular that may be worth reading into a bit more, the 2008-2011 KTM Duke 690. Doesn't quite meet your power and weight requirements (62 HP/354 wet) but it's pretty damn close. That said, it's a KTM 690, you can easily extract more power from that mill. The 354 is curb weight, can also shed a substantial amount just getting it in to race trim. Biggest reason to look at the 2008-2011 is factory kit; they come with Brembo calipers, 48 mm forks, and forged Marchesini wheels. There's a couple on CycleTrader now around the $5k mark. I imagine this is an exceptionally fun bike to race. In my head you're at 75% of what a Kramer can do for 30% of the cost.

Re: 771 Racing - Brain Download

So, a few alternate suggestions have been tossed out, here's the quick Kurlon brain dump on them:

    2008-2011 Duke 690:
    - OK cost to get in to, 2016 Husky 701 SM can be found for a touch more though?
    - Not many setup for road racing though so it'll be a full build, available knowledge on setup potentially lacking.
    - Not competitive out of the crate in any class.
TLDR - If the Kramer didn't exist, I could see UL potential with heavy lifting and would have been game to do so but new options make it less appealing to me.

    NSF 250:
    - Only competitive in CCS Moto 3, LRRS allows any displacement which means it's outgunned there too.
    - I don't like being restricted to tiny Moto 3 tires if going for a big HP build.
    - Never seen one cheap, but they come with good kit all around out of the crate.
    - Crash well, engineered and built for the task.
TLDR - Actually thought about putting a 450 into an RS125 chassis back in the day, would like to try a proper RS125 some day.

    Pedo Bear RM450:
    - There isn't enough hand sanitizer in the world...
    - 'Busa conversion does make me curious...

KTM Duke 790 - The latest new LW hotness:
    - Half the price of a Kramer, BARGAIN! Needs all the suspension work... bah.
    - 100hp, 370lbs dry! Wait, my R6 is 100 to 110hp, 390lbs dry... don't want no heavy bike. Waiting to see what they actually trim down to in supersport config. Should be a LW weapon.
    - LW only, not UL legal so not a good pairing with the FZR.
TLDR - Like the Kramer, I can't afford one, not exactly a big used market out there to score one cheap. It doesn't really get my gears going either?

If you sprung the money for a Kramer, what would the pro/con bullets look like?

Re: 771 Racing - Brain Download

My primary con with them at the moment, based on the extremely limited data set of observing two at LRRS is I'm not super impressed with how they survive crashes? Other than that I like the package on paper, and they demonstrated their competitiveness in lots of classes this year. They're a setup that absolutely gets my gears going. I am curious how the motors are going to hold up over time in their hopped up state of tune.

That BRC kit looks bananas. Seems like a bold choice. Definitely the kind of thing I can understand. Just playing on that bike would be endless fun though I'm sure. What are those kits going for, like $5-6k + bike cost?

That's about right, I've got a touch more research to do and will start the search for the donor bike hopefully soon.

If I was assembling a pure kit, absolutely. In this case other than the motor, this is going to be a figure it out as I go mess so... if you're ok with it potentially taking two years, and some false starts, wrong purchases, etc?

Current theory is 2012 or later 250/300 XC. 6 speed but not a wide ratio gearbox.

Has the BRC Kit been tested at all in a road racing application? Seems like they’ve been running them for MX and enduro.

Tested? No. But they have a lot of prior experience designing and producing highly effective kart motors and are confident in the 500 for this application.

Re: 771 Racing - Brain Download

Ok cool. I was just wondering, this is a sweet project but when I did a bit more reading on I didn't see anything about an RR application. Same concerns with anything that's intended design is being a dirt bike engine, can it handle sustained WOT runs? I did see as well they have an extensive background in karting, so that bodes well. I can't imagine an application where one would spend more time at WOT than karting.

I may have missed this part, but are you planning on doing a full GP-type conversion? Clip-ons, bodywork, rearsets, etc? Maybe just dip your toe in for a season as a motard, then if that's successful go full conversion?

Re: 771 Racing - Brain Download

I figure the hard part is going to be getting the geometry figured out for a full GP conversion, so thats what I'll do first, may actually run it with the stock motor in that form depending on timing/budget. I've got Mistake for regular motard duties, no need to reinvent that wheel.
