LRRS 2017 Round 1 AM 587 Race Report

LRRS AM 587 Round 1 Race Report

First off I want to thank my sponsors Seacoast Sport Cycle for being part of my program for 2017 and beyond. They have been a huge help with making sure I always have the gear and parts I need to race. Also thank you to Brass Knuckle Scrappers Wicked Tough Apparel for joining my program again for 2017.

So last season was a great year for me being my rookie season, a couple of novice wins, bump to Amateur status, and cutting time off my laps.

    Thursday Practice

I started this season with Thursday practice since I felt this was my best chance to work on things in a more low key setting. The morning started out not so great, what was supposed to be a dry day started out wet. Since I only have the one set of rains I didn’t want to waste them so I waited till the second session to go and check things out. After that session I began to work on a small list of things I didn’t get a chance to try last season. I also had some help from some of the riders that were at the track as well. Overall it was a successful day and I was able to get within 2 seconds of my best time from last season.

    Friday

I have been on a crazy schedule up until Round 1 and had considered running in Penguin Racer Practice but the last 4 months of my job, gym, prepping the bike, loading the trailer, and dealing with my ex. I decided to take a day and do absolutely nothing but hang out at the track. Some say waste of time, I say it was tremendous. Rolled out of bed as they were running the riders meeting for the penguin students, did a couple of things to the bike, and waited around till LRRS tech opend at 4. Bike was teched by 4 pm, and then it was back to just hanging out and catching up with friends that I hadn’t seen since October.

    Saturday

Woke up and it was already crazy warm which was awesome, and meant it would be a good day on track. Ran both practice sessions and clicked off some decent times again and saw a bit of time drop from Thursday practice as well. A quick riders meeting and it was on to racing.

A lot of you have been asking me, pressuring me into adding another race to my weekend schedule, well here goes nothing

GTL (Yes that’s right I survived GTL) 9th Place Best Lap 1:27.872

I grided up something like dead last and just went in with the strategy to finish the race not last. Lights went out and oh, I got a crappy start. Got in front of maybe two people and pretty much stayed there the entire race. Spent the first 13 minutes behind the same rider and just couldn’t get by him as I was getting a bit tired and worn out. Got passed at about the 15 minute mark and would basically ride my own race from there till the flag came out. Which brings me to something that has me kicking myself and also wish LRRS would have stated they were using a new flagger as well. I basically got cut short by 1 lap. One of the experts passed me right before the start finish line and we both took at the time what I was 90% sure was the white flag, the leader of the race was behind me so technically it was the white flag for me and checkers for anyone behind me as the leader was well right there. So I sail into 1 and the expert (not the leader) begins to celebrate giving the thumbs up and waving at the corner workers while Im yelling in my helmet that we have one more lap. Anyways I decided to just cut the race at that point and follow the train into the pits. Come to find out later on it was the white flag that I saw and the flagger had the checker out in sight but not waving as we went by. Guess it wasn’t the only issue with flags this weekend and hopefully they will get this new guy up to speed for may

LWGP 6th Place Best Lap 1:26.032

One of the two races that I always look forward to. Gridded up for this one with some hopes that I might make it up front to at least a top 5 finish. Lights go out and yet again I get a terrible launch (you’ll start to see a trend here) anyways I cycle back a few spots going into turn 1 and just try to hang on best I can. Again I get stuck behind someone who I just cant make it past. I had the corner speed to catch up but they just had the slightly better drive in the corners and a little more motor on the front straight.

ULSB 6th Place Best Lap 1:24.879

Another race that I usually look forward to since I get to race against some of my friends on motards which makes for some great racing and an even better learning experience. Yet again I get a absolutely crapy start to the race and fall back in the pack. I again find myself making up positions but with 3 laps to go I finally make it to some clear track put my head down and crank off some consistent fast laps. I catch up to the two people that I enjoy racing with but just not enough time to make anything happen.

    Sunday

Wake up Sunday and the weather looks iffy at best. The day starts out dry so I head out for practice on my shagged out race tires. Click off some decent laps and see Im 4th on the tower so all hope isn’t completely lost.

With practice over Im not racing till after lunch so I switch to fresh Dunlops for the afternoon hoping it will stay dry (and I should have used these on Saturday)

LWSB 6th Place Best Lap 1:26.199

Shall we continue with the bad starts, I think so. Got another not so great start and Im going into Turn 1 close to the back of the pack. This race is against some built SV’s but I make the best of it. Again as in some of my previous races of the weekend I find myself battling with people to only come up short by a few laps.

LWSS 5th Place Best Lap (Rain) 1:40.052

This is the race I always want to do best it and I typically find the most level playing field. Well it was raining for this one so the rains went on before hand and I got ready for the rain. I go out on the sighting lap and almost lose it in the bowl. I thought it was the rear coming around on me, but after watching the footage I almost tucked the front. Guess Ill keep those rains scrubbed in or something after each winter. Regardless this time I get a decent start but am a bit bashful in the wet with people close to me. Anyways I battle most of the race with Rider 192 and it was a blast. This was honestly the most fun I had all weekend. I was putting a wheel to him in a lot of the corners and just couldn’t make it stick. Well it came down to the last corner turn 12 and I said to myself “you can get a better drive than him" I picked up the throttle earlier than I had been out of 12 and it stuck. I managed to get him at the line by a little over 0.02 seconds.

Anyways the winter was finally over and I have a lot more work to do to the bike and to myself. I still have weight to lose on me. And some gremlins to work out of the bike. But to be honest I left Round 1 with more questions than answers, feeling like I left something in reserve. But its only up from here right?

Thanks for the report! Reading it brings me right back to being there. About those starts, are you getting out-dragged off the line, or swarmed going into T1? I second the advice of practice starts every time you leave the pits, and maybe pull in during a practice and try one to simulate a re-grid when you've got a few good laps down.

You good sir are braver than I would be, no way would I run DOT's in the rain if I have the choice.

Its a combination of things, a lot of detail pieces of the start need work. And I do get boxed in often going into 1 which I need to be a bit more aggressive, not much, but hold my position instead of giving it up.

Regarding the starts- If you're never lifting the front at all, try dumping the clutch faster and faster until you start to whoolie that bitch every time. Then dial it back a bit. I'm totally serious. You have to find the line first or you'll always go too easy on it. On the flip side, if the front is consistently getting out of control and requiring you to roll off, try starting with the rear brake covered. See if you can tame it with the brake or clutch instead of rolling off.

    1. Get to the friction zone
    2. Rev to the meat of the power curve. Say around 9k on your SV.
    3. Ease it out

These are all good pointers, Ill be putting them into practice.

Like I said lots to work on and I left a lot to be desired for results and performance this past round.

Lets hope I do better in May.

Dude... in LWSS you didn't beat #192 by 0.2 seconds, you beat him by 0.02 seconds. That must have been an exciting drag race!

+1 to how fun LWSS was in the rain. I'm typically an overly cautious rider, and the rain kind of forces me to accept some slipping and sliding.

Fixed the time up top, track intel might be a bit wonky with the 0.216 it thinks but it was close no matter what. #192 came over to my garage almost before I had my helmet off to talk about the battle. Good Times.

yea, that race was a lot of fun, even with the sloppy wet conditions.
