    NV #313 Round 2 Report/Crash Video

Well since I only completed 4 actual race laps, i'll keep it brief.

Unfortunately I had to work Friday and Saturday, so I didn't end up arriving until Saturday night around 9pm.

Sunday first practice - Short, only got three laps in. Worked on fixing my line from 1 - 2 and felt pretty comfortable.

2nd practice - felt comfortable on the bike and started picking up the pace in a couple of my problem areas. dropped a few seconds off my PB to reach a 1:23.6

23's were my goal for the weekend so I was happy, especially on very limited seat time. Just wanted to maintain through the races and get ready for june....

First Race was #5, Novice Starter 2. Start was pretty bad as usual, but moved into 3rd going into 3. Next lap I passed the front 2 guys also going into turn 3. The two guys ahead of us in the video are in the Starter 1 class. So anyway, held first for a couple of laps, ended up hitting a new PB of 1:23.0 and then unfortunately crashed on my approach to turn 1.

Still kind of confused about the crash. I made my first downshift ok, then hit my second, released the clutch but the bike felt like it was in between gears, like a false neutral. After about a second of this, it slammed into gear and fishtailed me all over the place eventually causing me to lose it and go down pretty hard.

Any ideas on what would cause this or how to avoid it? I know I can just grab the clutch, but it happened so quickly i'm not confident that i'd be able to react in time.

Anyway, bike wasn't too bad and I was fine. Next race was #8 so I had to rush to get it back together. Replaced the shift rod and clutch lever and she was good to go. This was right around the second call for race 8. I went over to tech but no one was there. Looked around and asked people for about 10 mins and still couldn't find anyone. At this point it was past final call and I was just frustrated so I decided i'd be better off skipping the race.

Overall I was happy about my times and felt good out there, but would have liked to make it through a weekend without crashing.

Thanks to everyone I normally pit with for all the help and encouragment, and big thanks to Trouble! Just met the guy and he helped me rush to get my bike back together, very cool.

Anyway, here's the video, crash occurs just prior to 6 mins in.

If you ever question a shift, shift UP! Being one or two gears too high is always better than suddenly finding first by accident.

+1 Whenever you get a false... always shift up, get the bike under control, then get yourself back in the right gear. That'll keep the rear from locking like that.

and if it starts to wag again like that its gonna run wide so just go with it. if you have to run it around the oval or through the grass then do it. I've done both and came out of it without touching the ground.

Good job on the new PB. So that was you on the inside of me going into 3 off the start........

Too bad on the crash. I saw the waving yellow as I was coming in and I saw a bike skittering towards NASCAR 1 but didn't realize it was you. Glad you're OK.

And yea, Trouble is the man.

Good meeting you this weekend. See you out there another time.

What kind of gearing are you running? Sounds like you're running some crazy 14/48 setup or something.

I remember seeing you high tailing it up to the air fence after the crash and thinking, "well I don't think he hurt, he is moving pretty fast for being in leathers!"

I probably could of, but it was already way past third call, and my helmet had a little rash, so I don't even know if they woulda let me go.

Yeah good advice.... but it just happened so quickly I hardly had time to react.

Yeah it was good meeting you too man. Saw your times from Sunday, looks like you were running much faster than from when I first talked to you. You gonna be there in June?

I guess I've never checked...I think when I bought the bike it was advertised as -1/+1 which I believe would put it at 15/46. What makes you ask that though? Where does it sound strange? I could just be in the wrong gear....i am a noob afterall

Hah, yeah man I was booking it! I was a little disoriented after the crash so I couldn't really tell if I was in a safe zone or in the middle of the race line! I just figured getting to the edge of the track as quickly as possible was probably my best bet!

I'm going to see. June's a busy month this year so we'll have to see.

Glad you made it out with no injuries! I was the guy on the left in the Starter 1 wave so I had no idea you had gone down. Did you step down hard enough to get the shift or was it too light maybe?

Im assuming hes running a R6. Looks like it from the video. Ass wag on the R6 on braking is normal. Its how you know the slipper clutch is working. If its not then it tire hops like mine did all weekend.

Once again assuming its a R6 14/48 isnt that odd. I run 15/48 on mine.

14/48 is quite a bit different from 15/48 and 15/48 is about as short as I'd want to go on any 600 at Loudon.

Yeah. Sounded like it was screaming all the time but it's an R6, they like the high revs.

I would try shifting down without the clutch. Sounds rough, but it's actually smoother, and harder to mistime it as you did with the clutch. If you do mistime a clutchless downshift, nothing happens, cause it won't change gears.

I assumed the back end was wagging because he locked the rear up. that's a little different than normal wagging.

Bummer about missing your last race! Next time we'll have to hang out and have drinks or something instead of turning wrenches. Or maybe both but under less of a time constraint. Glad I could help a little anyway. I can hold vicegrips like nobody's business!

So I know the back was wagging around, but the way the bike actually went down almost looked as though the front tucked

Glad you're alright. T1 is a quick place to crash!

I like to keep the clutch covered for events like this. Actually I ride most of the time with the clutch covered. Just an old habit.

Glad you're ok. Off-topic, but worth mentioning... No bashing intended... If I didn't know ahead of time that the crash was in T1 I'd have assumed a highside in 4. Missing your marks in 3 was setting you up way off of the T4 apex and it's highside city out there. Looked like you might have spun the rear up out there a lap or so earlier?

You two guys in starter 1 were flying! Good job out there, and yeah I guess I may have been too gentle on the shifter. I'm adjusting my shift rod/lever right now to make for an easier/smoother shift.

I'm terrified to try this, but it may be the right thing to do. I just realized after riding my dirt bike tonight that I always clutchless downshift there.... so I guess I can try to apply the same technique to the street bike. Any pointers on trying it?

Someone in our group needs to crash... I figure i'm helping you guys out by taking one for the team... every weekend. Definitely taking the ruckus down again next time! Let's go for a ride or something before then!

Yes good point. I think maybe the rear end wag was violent enough to shake the whole frame and cause the front end to tuck??, or in the panic I may have grabbed the front brake. I'm not really sure honestly, I don't think I grabbed any brake... but I dunno, it happened so quickly.

Thanks, and yes from here on out I will certainly have my hand hovering over the front brake. I've had the bike hit a false neutral in the past and have always been able to recover... guess I just froze up this time.

Yup, my line through 3 and 4 is so inconsistent and I certainly did slide out the rear going up the hill a few times. That is the next area of the track I want to work on. I'd certainly appreciate any pointers, honestly I'm kinda lost in that section.

I know you aren't supposed to use cones as reference points but I'm gonna just because its the easiest way to describe the line. Tip in for T3 at the second to last cone. draw a line from there through the apex all the way to about a foot inside of that dark black patch of pavement on the left at the second nascar transition. keep turning in a smooth arc and it'll point you right up the hill to the apex of 4. from that black patch you get a much straighter shot up the hill and it keeps you away the off camber part that's on the outside of 4.

I'm glad you got out of that without much damage, but sucks you missed the next race. Sorry I wasn't any help, I was still recovering from my race and didn't realize you were in a time crunch. I'll be a better pit mate next time, but we should probably just adopt Trouble, too.
