    Attn Kawi Dealers

I have a coworker looking to get a newer style Ninja 250. She will be putting at least $1000 down and will also be looking to finance some gear if possible. Please let me know what you have available so I can show her what's around. She just put a down payment on a leftover 2010 that parkway is asking $4500 for. I'm trying to prove to her she's getting ripped off and that there are better dealers out there then the first one you go to. Needless to say she's not the brightest shopper.

Nault's Windham always has great prices and specials, and they're very cool to deal with. I think they have 250s for $3499 right now.

haha I know, and left overs should be a bit less I'd assume. Could she talk the price down, yeah. But i'd rather just send her to a dealership that will do right by her the first time around. asking $4500 is insane.

Don't know exactly where you are but call Hudson Cycle and ask to talk to Jennifer and tell her Doug Shepherd sent you... She'll treat you well.

Different strokes for different folks. There is also plenty of really decent used gear out there.

She said "they had a nice jacket for $100". I don't know of any nice jacket with decent protection for $100 off the rack of a dealership. I only help people get into riding if they do it the right way. 1) by taking the msf class 2) investing in protective gear. How many new riders have you came across that said "I'll buy gloves or a jacket later when I can afford it?" I've seen plenty of intro posts here that say things exactly like that.

When people get it into their mind that they are buying a bike, not being able to afford protective gear doesn't phase them. Dealerships can easily just add a couple hundred to the 'sale price' of the bike and apply the extra to gear. I don't know why they don't offer this more often.

She's a girl. her options for used gear is nothing like yours and mine. Even then there are things like helmets that I wouldn't advise her to buy used. I tried convincing her to wait until she has all the gear and then get a bike. I know she's not going to do that, so I'm trying to she her the second best choice IMO.

I hear you Mike and yes, we've all seen the posts or perhaps met at least one individual who doesn't really have any foresight other than to get a bike.

The mope smiley is because, rather than pay 12% (or whatever) interest over the duration of a loan for bike and gear, for roughly $250-$350 out of pocket, your rider friend could very likely end up with much better, albeit used, gear than what the stealership is offering and may even come out the other end with a full ensemble. All it takes is some effort cruising around any given forum or perhaps Craig's list.

BTW; about what size is your rider friend?

I don't recall seeing any 250's on the floor over at riverside today when I went to pick up my new bike but give them a call. Tell her to ask for Jerome and tell'em Duey sent her and Jerome will take care of her, and if she needs info on gear go talk to my old boss Dana in parts dept.

I would estimate the cost of gear to be over $500. In my eyes, even at $60 for the first year of interest on the gear is well worth the insurance of knowing you are as protected as can be.

She's barely 5'. Not exactly thin, but not exactly heavy. Maybe 120lbs?

Bummer. The jacket I have is going to be way too big for her.

As far as financing gear? I feel that a little effort and some out-of-pocket money will garner the best results however I fully realize that it is something which is ultimately not my decision.

    Re: Attn Kawi Dealers

Its not my money nor is it how I would spend it if it were. But if she's willing to spend $1000 over book for a bike, then she certainly isn't going to price out gear. I'm just trying to push the right things her way and make it as convenient as possible so that she doesn't have an excuse to not to have the right gear when she is riding. two things that frustrate me are when people are stupid with their money (unless I benefit) and riding with out gear, she would do both. I hope that if I help convince her gear is as important as the bike, if one of her friends ever looks to her for advice about bikes she can at least talk to them with some sense.

Will this thread help your position any?

Many of the injuries posted happened to members of this very forum. Might help drive home the message of the importance of protecting one's self.

Good luck, Mike. I highly respect what you are doing.

At full retail price the dealership makes $34.00 on a Ninja 250. Then they gotta prep it and fill it with gas....

If you can get one for even a few hundred over retail, its good.

I'll try directing her to the thread. I have some scars I showed her when I went down with gear. Naults has a very fairly priced 250 o the site. I'm hoping she'll take a trip up there.

Nault's Windham -- see Cliff -- he treated me right when I bought the 09 KLR in March.

Never pay any dealer for prep. Its part of there buisness to prep the bikes (or cars) they are selling. Fuel and registration are additional charges that are o.k. to pay for, they are additional costs the dealer has to sell the bike. But charging for uncrating and assembly is a joke.
