If you don't need a high quality unit, you can get one from Harbor Freight for around $25 with the 20% coupons that are everywhere. I picked one up a couple years ago. It works fine for basic home use. Unless you are going into the business and need to do 20 a day or something like that? Not great quality, but it works ok. You get what you pay for, so don't expect Stihl quality.

Woo I was just debating this yesterday when I took out the chainsaw to cut a log.. and it didn't do squat. Last time I bought a new chain for about $14.. now that I have two blunt chains I figure it's time to buy one of these HF units. I'll be waiting for the coupons (maybe next weekend). Electric sounds good.. as manually filing it seems like it'll take too much elbow grease

I had a cheapo sharpener once, didn't even get thru sharpening a chain one time, went back to hand filing, threw the damn thing away, that was a long time ago, I still sharpen my own in a pinch, but mostly pay get them sharpened (3-4 chains at a time, when I'm down to 1 + the one that is on my saw, I bring a bunch in to get sharpened)

my experience... doesn't really take much longer to sharpen by hand

I don;t think the HF ones are for me. No I'm not going into the chain sharpening industry but I want something that will last. I did find ones I think are good quality on amazon for what I feel a fair price is. I did consider the timberline one that Randy mentioned in a different thread. For not much more I can get the Oregon electric one I was looking at. Maybe I'll end up with both. Who knows. As it stands now I have at least 5 chains to sharpen.
