Wanted: Someone that fixes XBOX 360

So I just got the RRD. The system is about 5.5 years old. Should I at this point bother with someone trying to fix it or just buy a newer version XBOX? Is there anyone here that fixes them?

Re: Wanted: Someone that fixes XBOX 360

    Its a thermal issue.

The CPU overheats and causes the RROD.

I would volunteer to fix it, but I am not local.

You can find tons of tutorials on you tube that will walk you through the repair. Its simple. get some high thermally conductive paste and reapply between the CPU package and the heat sink.

They also sell repair kits that replace some suspect hardware.

If you are wise you could also replace the heat sink and fan with a better aftermarket setup.

    Good Luck

With the 720 coming out this time next year I wouldn't buy a 360

I have looked at the fixes online and the one that gets into the system I was worried that I would get it all apart and either not get it back together or it wouldn't work. I have seen the towel also and was suspect if it actually worked. Also good point on the 720.

I've had a few 360's now. I toweled one and it worked for 6months before having to be toweled again. As far as I know that one is still working.

Re: Wanted: Someone that fixes XBOX 360

we get these on ours frequently. here is our solution:
    1. bring unit to GameStop.
    2. get trade-in credit.
    3. purchase refurbished X-box for short $$ (about the same as a repair kit but without the effort).
    4. Use for about 2 years.
    5. Get RROD.
    6. Repeat steps 1-5

Re: Wanted: Someone that fixes XBOX 360

Once you fix it, stand it vertically.

I bought my 360 used from a Gamestop about 4 years ago and haven't had an issue.

My brother went through 4 or 5 of them before standing it vertical. Hasn't replaced one since.

I have fixed 2 360's with the use of You Tube. If you are handy, it really isn't all that hard to fix.
The towel method works, it just doesn't last. Get a small tube of thermal compound and watch some videos.

Re: Wanted: Someone that fixes XBOX 360

Ive repaired several and its never lasting. Sometimes ill get a few months out of them but then they quit again. I ended up buying a newer elite and never had an issue again but i know it will eventually. At this point you got nothing to lose by opening it up and redoing the thermal compound.
There is also another trick called the q-tip trick. Ive never tried it but my co worker has kept his machine alive for the last few months with it. What you do i jam a buch of q-tips in the fan ports causing the unit to overheat and reflow the solder around the chipsets. Seems like the towel trick to me. He comes every few weeks saying he had to q-tip his machine again.
The real deal fix involves removing the x-clamps, redoing the thermal paste and remounting the heatsinks to the board using spacers and screws and overheating the unit to do a re-flow. Even professionally done they dont usually last.
The trick to keeping them alive in the first place is to make sure they have plenty of air flow. Keeping them vertical helps this but ive also made a mesh screen shelf mine sits on and added an afterglow high speed fan to the 360 to keep temps down. so far so good and i game 30-40 hours a week if i can. If this one dies (which it will) im switching to my ps3 until the 720 comes out then ill buy a new clearanced 360. No way MS is getting more of money for selling a defective system for years. Im still pissed i had to buy a few of them when my original ps1 and even sega saturn have had zero issues since i bought them like 20 years ago.
