Tell your buddy with the fireplace to get a pellet insert.
My father is the only one I know that can coax real heat out of a fireplace. His has a heatilator, which I am sure helps.
Ours made the house colder whenever we used it. I stuffed an insert in the fireplace. Wheymobettah.

fireplaces used to work cause they had a fire going in them all winter long, the thermal mass of the masonry is what radiated the heat

Maybe.. but I think wood stoves have worked better since always.
