Posting for a friend - bike on a budget

A guy at work is looking for a first bike. He was drooling over my SV650 a couple of years ago and he's drooling over the SV1k now. Problem is, he's got $2k stuck in his head as a max. I told him he was going to end up with something very old, very broken, or very stolen, but he's not changing his mind. Anyone have something reasonably sporty available?

I saw this listing but I don't know what I'm looking at. I would assume crashed with all of the plastics removed.

I have a Katana 750. Has 5k on it. Just cleaned the carbs and put in a jet kit. Needs a petcock or a rebuild kit.

    $2k is a solid gen 1 SV650 budget nowadays.
Will require a carb clean, some seals, and that he toss some $ at wear items though.

That's a shit GS for 1400. I found a mint one for even less than that back about 10 years ago.

Keep lookin. You'll find something. GS500, Ninja 250, Ninja 500, maybe even an SV650. They're out there. You'll find one.

Is he licensed and/or taken a course? If not, have him take a course which provides bikes. Then worry about finding a bike. Give him some things to think about when riding on the class bikes - like leg room and arm reach.

Yeah... All he said at first was that he was looking and the budget. Now I find out maybe not this year, and no class or permit yet. Call off the dogs.

He's got the interest - there's still hope. He's taken the bait, set the hook. Show him where to go for a class. RI resident? I believe he can take the course at CCRI paid for by the state, and they provide the course bike. MA, but he's in the national guard and he said they're going to pay for the course.

I'd put a headlight and turn signals on it and sell my streetfighter F4 for about $2g.

Re: Posting for a friend - bike on a budget

I bought a '95 FZR600 for $1,000...didn't maintain it beyond oil/tires/clutch/brakes/regulator/sticking switches...never touched the valves...had it stolen, mowed over in a parking lot, low sided in 12a at loudon, and rode it 10 years until the the transmission junked out

just bought a lower mileage '94 for $900 and going to do it all over again

$2k may get him a worn out sv650 or "popular" bike (R6/CBR600/GSXR)...but I think will get him a good condition other bike...I saw a mechanic selling a '97 ZX-7 with new tires/chain/sprockets/full fairings for $1,500

I'm going to be selling my 2002 Honda 919 hornet soon. It's a great bike. PM me if he is interested. It will be around his price.

However, I would buy that 900rr if I were him.
