Keep on mind that water softner salt is salt , just bigger pieces , some have additives for iron. Stores have it ask year round and its a little less expensive than rock salt this time of year.
pellets are more expensive, but salt is salt , the bigger pieces might work better, they won't desolve as fast, and don't be surprised when you find a little gravel in the bag,
My Home Depot has 60 lbs bags for $4.49
Snow melting salt is $6.99 for a 50 lbs , go figure.

DIY tip someone told me about (plan on doing it later this week). Fill pantyhose with salt and string them along the rood edge over the dam like snakes.

there are several different kinds of "salt" for ice melting

rock salt or sodium cloride is the cheapest and least effective

also magnesuim cloride and calcium cloride and urea (cow piss)

I always get calcuim cloride, ((pelletts), it costs more, but works at a colder temperature than sodium cloride and is about 4 times as effective and does not errode concrete like rock salt

I've got half a 40lb bag in my basement I'm not using, but your location is a bit on the far side.

    Re: Rock salt.

Sorry, when I said salt is salt and pellets are more expensive, I should have made it more clear, I was talking about water softener pellets vrs water softener salt, water softener pellets are ground salt ,additives for heavy iron sometimes , are man made, uniform in size, and are more expensive then " Rock Salt " . I have not seen calcium added to water softener pellets, generally that's part of why you have a water filter softener to start with, To remove minerals such as calcium and such.
water softener salt is just bigger, size of a quarter ish , and has no additives , not as clean as table salt, brownish sometimes , just big ugly salt crystals .
Calcium is awsome , alot less corosive, doesn't stain or bleach , safe for pets , works in much colder temps ,(advertises down past neg 20 ) and almost 5 x the price .
    Calcium chL. $18.50 for 50lbs
Namebrand icemelt rocksalt , no calcuim added $6.50 for 40lbs to 50lbs bag
Water softener salt, available all year round in abundance, at almost any store from supermarket to hardware store to drug store , $4.50 ish for 60lbs bag . Plus you can grind it up and put a little on your eggs in the morning, I'm hungry
