    Wanted: Suzuki SV650 Naked

Looking to pick one up, it'll be my 2nd bike...I had a good time learning on my GS500, but it's time to move on. Either 1st gen or 2nd...I like them both, but it has to be naked. Although I wouldn't mind a removable windscreen and a bellypan. Color doesn't matter.

Anyways, my price range goes up to the low 3's. I can't really afford to spend much more. I'd prefer to spend less on the bike itself and leave some room for mods.

I'd also entertain the idea of a lower CC Ducati Monster...but I don't think I'm ready for the extra cost in insurance, parts, and maintenance.

Consequently, I'd be selling off my GS500...but I was gonna wait till spring to see if I can get a little more out of it.

Well, just throwing it out there hoping to catch something. I've been searching these forums, the SVRider forums, eBay, and I've been doing a 200 mile radius search of craigslist. But if anyone knows of any that might be available, please let me know. Thanks a lot.

Craigslist (Boston) had a first gen sv650 that looked decent for ~$1,500 last week. It looked good but I just don't have the cash right now.

Hmm, must've missed it, I can't find it anymore. If it was clean and ran strong, that would've been perfect.

Hah ya I saw that one. Nice looking bike, but ya just a bit far and a little above my price range.

I was trying to get a hold of this guy, but I'm sure it sold fast:

    http://boston.craigslist.org/nwb/mcy/1532627956.html

at worst, I could've just parted that out myself for some extra cash.

    Re: Wanted: Suzuki SV650 Naked

    So I've been talk to someone who's got a 99 sv650. Here's the ad:

I am posting my 1999 Suzuki SV650 naked. The bike has 11k miles and is in mint shape but does not run. The battery is dead, when hooked up to a charger the bike does turn a bit, but does not run. I bought it to convert to a track bike and just do not have the time to play with it. This bike is in excellent shape, everything shines almost as if it came out of a showroom. The bike has been sitting for quite some time, but you will never know it is a 99. I'm asking a winter price of $1,100.

Any questions feel free to email me and I can provide my number. I'm available most evenings and weekends to show the bike. If you would like photos I can supply, I just don't have them on my office computer, I can send when I get home.

    Thanks for looking!
Apparently it's never been running since he's had it. Price is low, bike looks to be in good shape, but if it's been sitting for this long, I may find myself having to replace a lot more stuff than I want. Carbs, rejetting, fluids, tires etc... What do you guys think?

I wouldn't think so. Just empty the gas and put in some fresh stuff.

    Re: Wanted: Suzuki SV650 Naked

Not a bad price, and it looks to be in good shape. It's about 50 miles from me so I haven't had time to go out there and check it out. I know sometimes sitting gas can ruin the fuel lines and the tank might have to be flushed. I might pull the trigger, you guys think I'm getting good value here at $1100?

Also looks like it needs mirrors. Can't really tell from the picture, but the rear tire looks spent.

Yea, based on another picture I saw, tires look like they're done. And I'd probably go with some bar end mirrors.

While it could very well be carbs/bad gas, always assume the motor is toast if you can't hear it run.

If it has a spun bearing, bent valve, etc, that is big $$ to fix. You don't know if that's the case, and apparently he doesn't either. Remember this before making your offer.

yea, that's why I'm a little conflicted. I don't wanna get myself into a mess that I'm not ready to handle. I'm mechanically inclined enough to do some basic DIY type stuff, but nothing major.

He claims to have bought it non-running, that he wanted to "tinker" with it and build it as a track bike, but never found the time to "tinker" with it. But I don't know if it just needs some tinkering, or some serious work that he doesn't have the time for.

    Re: Wanted: Suzuki SV650 Naked

But then again, these SV650s are pretty strong and reliable motors, so it could very well just be a minor fueling issue that'd be easy enough to fix.

Definitely worth checking out. Bring some tools and a decent battery. Test for compression. Check for spark. A good sized zip tie will reach to the bottom and bring up some of the metal filings with it if there are any. Hell the carbs come off with two screws.. do that and throw some fuel into the intake...

    Re: Wanted: Suzuki SV650 Naked

Ok so after speaking with him tonight, he was very honest and upfront. He actually frequents the forums and says he saw my thread. Bought the bike a few weeks ago. Original owner claimed that the bike's engine was "fried." Current owner hasn't had the time to really look into it and figure out what exactly is wrong with it. His original plan was to swap the motor out for a 2nd gen sv650 motor anyways, so the condition of it didn't matter.

So now my question is....worst case scenario: I have to purchase a used 1st gen engine off ebay or locally from a yard. How much work is it for myself to perform the swap? I really don't know what I'm doing, but that's how I jump into everything. I have basic tools and I'd probably pickup a manual.

    Re: Wanted: Suzuki SV650 Naked

I'm letting this one pass for a variety of reasons. Mostly because of the time it'll take me to complete the work and find the right engine. And because I'm strongly leaning towards the 2nd gen SV's. So my search will continue. Thanks for your help guys.

Yea I know, it's just a matter of how long it'll all take me. I don't really know what I'm doing, and I get obsessive over this type of stuff. So I'll be spending hours and hours reading up every little thing about the bike and it's motor. Plus the big thing is trying to make the Fuel Injected 2nd gen motors work with the 1st gen carbs. Would I be running into air/fuel issues in the future? Will the exhaust fit up ok? It's just not worth the headache for me.

I think at this point, I'd rather just put some extra money towards a nice 2nd gen if I can find one. This is a good bike though for anyone willing to put the time into it.

Just ask TrickyMike to go stand next to it, it'll fire up without thumbing the starter and have ~10 more HP.
