    SV650 Petcock/Filter

Anyone got a mint one of these? Mine is OK I think but has some paint on it... would like to swap it out and OEM cost is a bit high. Looks like the attached.

I replaced the petcock on my Gen1 (which is for sale BTW) with an oem replacement from BikeBandit.com. my petcock leaked and allowed the carbs to flood before filling over into my bellypan. I rebuilt it and it happened again. Replaced it completely and it hasnt happened since. dont get it why the rebuild didnt work but oh well.

    that pingel shit is pricey.

brian you mean it leaked after you used the oem replacement? Or the replacement was fine?

They list it at bikebandit at 90 bucks, around what I found it for in other places. A bit steep for a petcock. I figured someone might have one on a spare tank sitting around that they wouldn't need.

Word? Guess I can just suck it up and buy OEM for 80 bucks... I would have thought someone had one kicking around on a spare tank though...?

I have a spare.. but it's in use on the spare tank.

I've rebuilt 2 gen-1 petcocks using the cheap rebuild kits on ebay. Never had a problem. Both rebuilds work fine now.
If you're really anal get a manual cutoff switch and pipe it between the petcock and the fuel "pump". I did this for a while and would turn it off when stored. After a while I started trusting the petcock again and removed it.

I've seen some nifty quick-disconnect fittings that seal when disconnected too.

Although I'm not sure why you care if it has some paint on it.. So what?

The screen/filter (piece sticking up in that diagram) is what has some paint on it. This reduces flow and if things start to get gummed up, it will clog sooner than if that screen was in good shape.

Since that screen/filter tube is not able to be removed, at least that I can tell, without breaking it, then replacing the whole unit is the solution.

I could cut that filter/screen off entirely, as I installed an in-line filter for a second line of defense, but ideally would not do so.

Ah. I thought maybe you meant overspray on the outer part.
    Carry on.

There are several on fleabay around the $40 mark.

    There is also this.

I saw that. It looks like it is attached to an aftermarket unit, so unsure if the OEM is actually modular. I've tugged on the filter on mine as hard as I dare without ripping it off, and wouldn't do so harder unless i knew I had a backup unit. So either way I'm probably in for a new unit... then can try replacing the current unit's filter a little more aggressively and if I break it, then NBD.
