My buddy has a sv650 is there any reason you suggest that bike instead of my gixxer? Or just cause you like that bike hahaha

He owns, like, eleven of them.

Anytime someone asks for advice about what bike to get, 35 people suggest an SV650, so it's a bit of an inside joke.

First two trackdays I did was with Cornerspeed at VIR North.

Don't over think it. Choose a track, take the beginner's instruction course and ride on!

I guess it's a poor joke if I have to explain it. Your liter bike will be fine if you ride within your limits and don't try to win the track day. On this forum SVs get recommended for everything from hauling a trailer to patching roof leaks. The SV is incredibly popular as a track day/race/street bike because-
    -Easy to ride without dying
    -Light-ish
    -Cheap
-Crashes well (read cheap to fix)
-provides fun without highsiding yourself right into long term disability
-some say you'll learn a lot more riding them, but I'm still slow and sloppy after 5 years on one (or two or three), so results vary.
    -Cheap
-Huge knowledge base and parts availability at any track.
-It's pretty much a GSX-R 1000 with 60% less power, poor brakes, and suspension from a mountain bike at Wal-mart.
-Reliable (unless you have on of those beautiful 1st gen carbed models)
-Tons of lightweight race classes anywhere you go
-Great for men that are comfortable with riding a girl's bike.
-Far less humiliating when you get passed by a 125 on track.
-Does not eat a set of race tires every day.

    Re: Track day gear

hahhahaha I have seen SV650 suggested in basically every post ive ever looked at hahhaha but interesting points maybe ill look into picking one up just for track. And with my gixxr ridding outside my limits is something I tend to try not to do seeing as that's exactly how I crashed my CBR1000 last year hahaha. So very careful with this beauty. yeah my goal for this season is two track days see how much I can learn in that and see if its for me or not then probably get a track bike next season if its for me. Which how can it not be I do ride a gixxer for fuck sakes

You'll love it man. Did my first TD 3 years ago and never looked back. Coming into this season with a dedicated track bike. Its a dangerous addiction.
As far as gear goes. Keep your eyes peeled for clearance deals online as well as used gear. I snagged an AXO Indy suit for under $500 couple seasons ago.
If you think youre gonna end up loving it (which you are) spend a little extra for decent gear so you dont end up replacing everything in a season or 2.

I think I made it three track days before I bought a dedicated track bike. The addiction is real it only gets worse.

Popular sites like sport bike track gear.com but for your cheapest gear you are likely to be better off going on Facebook. Join a group like TDJ (trackday junkie) or something like that. There's always gear going up on sale. That being said there is plenty of gear here on this forum. That is for sale

I don't think that it has to be newer than five years if you are only doing track days. It is preferred but not a requirement. I would double check with the track a provider on that. The five-year rule definitely applies to racing. Which this would not be.

At least 2 days. Day one is used for learning the lay of the land. Day two your brain is fresh from resting and things start clicking easier.

    Re: Track day gear

I'm kinda surprised nobody has mentioned that this site does a ton of auctions for track days throughout the season, depending on the day and the interest in the spot people have been able to score days for $150 sometimes even less. So be sure to be on the lookout for those. The only track day I've done so far was with penguin at loudon that I won through a NESR auction and I can't say enough good about them. Like you I was using my street liter bike and if I had to do it over again I would've rented a bike from penguin because the first day on track is very overwhelming with so much info to try to absorb, I think a less powerful bike would've been a much better learning experience, not to mention when near the end of the day comes around and you are getting comfortable and feeling like your getting pretty fast then one of the instructors passes you on a motard with quarter the power, like your standing still, being on a liter bike makes that a much more humbling experience and kinda bruises the ego more so then having it happen on a 650, I imagine anyways.

    Re: Track day gear

Yeah someone had sent me a PM explaining that they do auctions on the site from time to time and to keep an eye out for them. Which right now will most likely be like a 3rd or maybe 4th track day if I have to bite the bullet and pay some $$$ to get a slot for a weekend for sure then so be it. But I don't wanna spend the season waiting for these auctions to come up then with my luck miss it or not win at all haha. @myzx6 Are you planning on doing another track day this season?

I strongly recommend checking out Penguins Learn to Fly memberships. I've done it the last 2 years and it has saved me more than the price of membership on everything from track days, schools, and equally important parts. I have the Learn to Fly Plus.

Penguin Road Racing School - Home

And if you have not done a track day with them let me know because for your first day you can get it at my cost before even signing up and spending money. I plan to do the first friday in April round 1.
