Looking to buy my first bike!!!

I'm new to this forum and this is actually my first post. I'm looking to buy my first bike preferable something in the 600-650cc range like a cbr600, gsxr600, r6 or sv650. Looking to spend $2500-$4000 fuel injection would be great but not absolutely necessary. The ability to put frame sliders on it if it doesn't already have them would also be good. Anyone have something along those lines or know anybody or any place to look? Thanks

Frame sliders are for falling down. You must mean knee sliders.

I know what frame sliders are for and I mean frame sliders, I'm new to riding and hope I never need them but why not have them just in case.

Pay no mind to the peanut gallery...

Welcome to the forum. Keep an eye out in the Classifieds section, something might turn up that piques your curiosity.

And don't forget to factor all the other stuff that you'll need into your budget. A bike is just the beginning of all the other good shit you'll end up spending money on.

Re: Looking to buy my first bike!!!

I'm a strong advocate of the SV650. It was my first bike and there is a plethora of information on them- I have an '02 (last year of the carb) and I've done one carb adjustment on it. Nice smooth power curve and easy to keep both wheels on the ground. I've been considering selling mine, but I'd feel bad selling it to a new rider in its current condition (chain and sprocket need replacing, handle bars are pre-bent from a standing drop though!) This is not me offering to sell it though, sorry!

+1 on making sure you have money for gear! And welcome to the forum.

I advise to new riders that a 600 I-4 typically isn't a very good idea for a first bike. Yes they are cool and yes I'm sure all your friends have one but if you truly want to learn riding technique, get something older and smaller and something you won't mind dropping then graduate from there. Not saying that's gospel but generally speaking, starting on something smaller is usually easier to handle and learn on.

Yup.... I hate telling people what to buy, but 600cc (and up) race replicas just aren't the best bike for a beginner.

Yes, you CAN learn to ride on anything, but in the long run, the WISER choice is something with less power (sub 80hp) and cheap (whatever amount of money you don't mind throwing away just in case "it" happens.) History has proved that something that fits those basic criteria is generally the smarter choice for all new riders.

But buy what you want... it's a free country.

+1 go for an older, smaller bike first. maybe even a naked style that isnt a big deal when you drop it.

inline 4's are fun but a lot of times just get you in trouble when you pin it in a straight line. if you wanna learn how to ride well, and keep your license, dont just concentrate on outrite speed. there are plenty of those guys out there.

get a twin...more useable, predicable power for you starting out. sv650, monster 620 or 750 (my vote). they are plentiful, cheap, and sound much cooler too

if looking for a fuel injected bike (from your list), you'll be looking at
    2001+ GSX-R
    2003+ SV650
    2001+ CBR F4i or 2003+ 600rr
    2003+ R6

hope this helps. good luck wit your search. i would poke around here before going to craigslist. there tends to be more honest sellers here and do more scheduled maintence on their bikes.

Definitely craigslist... bikes are starting to get cheap again..just do some price researching, as there are still plenty of dreamers that have their old bikes priced really high! And yeah, gear ends up costing you more if you haven't thought of it...

I'm located in Lynn, MA and don't mind traveling about 1-2 hours. I appreciate all the suggestions about a smaller bike and I have looked at a few but being a little over 6' and weighing close to 220lbs, I feel really cramped on the smaller bikes. I've sat on a few of the ones I mentioned and they just seem to fit my body a little better. Is it really the power of the bike that matters or is it the stupid things the rider does with that power?

I think you are trolling but I'll respond to this.

It is both. The Power and the Stupid shit new riders do.

Like too much throttle input, too much brake input, Not enough lean angle, chopping the throttle, stabbing at the brakes...

New riders need a more forgiving bike. You can wring the piss out of an EX500 and it will only do 80mph and you can squeeze the brake lever with all your might but you aren't going to stop.

A newer 600 will wheelie if you whack the throttle (and quite possibly flip the bike) and if you squeeze the brakes to hard you will lock up the front tire or go ass or the handlebars.

If you're concerned about being cramped, a supersport probably isn't the bike for you. A sv650, er6n, ninja 650, or any other upright naked might be more up your alley. There as quick as you make em, too.

Welcome to the forum first off and yeah start off on something you can fun on and crash and not worry about it. I like SV650's myself that would make a good beginner bike.

There isn't a chance you are more cramped on an SV650 than you are on the race bikes you've sat on and if so, consider bikes such as the Radian 600 or Nighthawk 700. Yes they're likely as old as you and also a bit heavier but they have some extra room for your legs. They also perform reasonably well, the steering angle is forgiving and you won't mind doing the ever popular driveway drop with a bike of that nature.

As far as the second question, there are people who have learned on some very powerful and aggressive machines however the success to fail ratio does not play in your favor.

look at insurance rates too on a inline 6 from the big 4 companies. then look at a naked (standard) bike (that youll probably just keep liability only on anyway).
