    Wanted: Workshop stuff

I'm casually window shopping for just about anything workshop/tool related that might be useful down the line...

Got anything in good shape that for one reason or another you've upgraded away from and have been keeping as a "backup" but haven't touched for years?
Don't mind letting it go for a nominal fee that I can't resist?
Lemme know & hopefully it'll tickle my pickle.

    Priorities right now include:
    Work bench,
    Sawhorses,
    Metal/Wood working tools like
    Circular or Miter saws,
    Grinders/cutting tools,

    Blah blah blah...

    Re: Wanted: Workshop stuff

I strongly recommend building a workbench that fits your space. I fumbled around for years with a bench I got for free from a friend. Finally I caved...I built one for the space and I feel like a fool for not doing this sooner. I used 2x4s for a frame with 1/2 inch OSB as a backer to give it stability. I used maple plywood for the top and covered it with some leftover polyurethane (for floors) I had sitting around. Anything I spill on it wipes right off and it's easy to keep the surface clean. If the polyurethane starts to deteriorate I'll just throw another coat on, but despite several years of use that includes regular spilling of various bore solvents, it's held up well so far. I also added leveling feet to the legs which allowed me to get the bench perfectly level and tip free. Not only is a level surface convenient for referencing but fluids generally stay put better when spilled as there is no pitch for them to run along.

In the end, my DIY bench was much cheaper than anything I would buy and it fits the space perfectly (unlike anything I could buy).

I may have a corded circular saw lying around somewhere that I could get rid of. I'll see if I can dig it up this weekend.

I may have a HF drill press. Once I get my garage cleaned up and organized so I can setup my old craftsman press, then it would be available.

I’m picking up one of these Husky benches for my shop, $229 at Home Depot. Adjustable height, wheels, 2 drawers. I think the top is 30x60”.

When I priced 2 sheets of 3/4” oak plywood I’d use to make the top of a homemade bench @$75/each this seemed like a much better option.

I’ll check around through my wad and see if I have any tools I don’t need I can give you.

2nd on build a bench. Remember the one in the old house, post and beam 4x4 and 2x4? It was an absolute unit, fit the space perfect and was good practice. I got some industrial flooring from someone on here. I wanna find that shit again for the new bench in the new house. Speaking of that, I'll probably get a new tool box and clean up tools. Hit me up Mayish time frame.

Your in Worcester right? Pm me your phone number. I have ryobi chop saw you can have. Also a table cart on caster wheels that would make a good work bench.

    Re: Wanted: Workshop stuff

Another thing to keep in mind when you acquire a bench...If possible I recommend building your shop space in a corner with a large L shaped bench. I recently added a second bench to get the L format and it's by far the best improvement I've made. It gave me a huge amount of surface area but takes up minimal space and I was still able to work storage solutions in around it.

Getting your layout squared away before you acquire tools is ideal. I made the mistake of taking the "I'll figure it out when I get more tools" approach, which ended up being a lot more work in the long run. Allocate the space, get the bench(s) in place and go from there. It's much easier to layout correctly now and simply put things in place as you acquire them. Trust me, you don't want to change your bench configuration two years from now after you have acquired a bunch of tools.

I built my second bench just a couple of months ago and it was half of what the bench loudbeard posted costs. Below are what it cost me to build one at 30x60 (you could probably get away with 1/2 inch plywood for the work surface).

Work Surface: One 3/4inch 4x8 sheet of sanded maple plywood ($55)
Backer: One 1/2 inch 4x8 sheet of OSB ($27)
    Frame: Five 2x4s ($5.50)
    Leveling Feet: ($15)
    Total: $125

A second bench would be 30 inches longer as you'd be bolting the shorter one to it to get the L format. The only difference in building a longer bench is you'll probably need another 2x4 for an extra set of legs due to the length. The result is two sides at 30x60. You could build two benches for the price of what you would pay for one if you just bought it at the store.

I agree with the L shaped bench, that is what I am building, but stay away from plywood surface, is won't hold up to heavy motorwork, use hard maple planks instead
choose sugar maple over red or white oak, while oak may be heavier, it is not as hard

    Re: Wanted: Workshop stuff

I built my workbench out of my old kitchen base cabinets. I made it the length of one wall, I think a 12” cabinet, two 30” cabinets, and a 15” drawers. The top I made of two layers of OSB, glued and screwed together, topped with a piece of 1/4” Masonite. The Masonite has a coat of poly on it for spill resistance, and is held down by some small finish nails so it’s easily replaceable. Solid enough for my tinkering, but I’m not disassembling any engines on it.

On the wall above the bench I have pegboard. The rest of the walls are 1/2” OSB, so I can hang things anywhere, and painted white for brightness. Costco Feit 48” LED light fixtures. Other side of the room I’ve got some 36” metal shelf units, craigslisted from a shop that was downsizing.

    Re: Wanted: Workshop stuff

You guys are faaaaaan fekkin tastic!

Yeah, building vs buying a workbench is an internal debate right now... Long term I want a small workbench in my garage (like maybe 5-6 feet wide by 2 feet deep) as well as a slightly larger workshop in the basement. Something mobile like that Husky bench that Duncan posted might be the ticket for the garage... though I do concede that I could prob build something similar.

Mark, a circular saw would be awesome if you've got one.
Mike, a drill press would be FANTASTIC
Duncan, lemme know what cha got.
    Alex, hell to the yes.
Sam, yep, I'm in the Woo. Will PM. And a chop saw would kick ACE! I almost bought a Ryobi miter saw just the other night at Home Depot.

workbench was a quarantine project for my garage in march 2020. definitely something you should do on your own. watch some youtube videos and get an idea of what fits you best. i have a friend that made their own saw horses, and they're a pain to put away and store. i picked up the plastic stanley ones that are adjustable up/down and out.

    Re: Wanted: Workshop stuff

Thinking about selling a wood workshop set.

Small chop saw, big standing band saw, and a couple shopsmiths set up for different things. Also, a stand up dust collection system with pvc pipe to connect to the equipment. There is a planer I might let go too.

It would take me a bit to get pics and prices, and would definitely want to sell it as a lot.

Long story short, my father passed away and I inherited it, but the place I would put it is occupied by my POS father in law, so it will be years before I would actually be able to use this stuff.

+1. I kept my cabinets from a remodel and when a neighbor was scrapping a bunch of butcher block, boom! Perfect workbench.

I've probably got a bunch of files that I have no real use for, as well as an electric leaf blower. If I'm passing thru Worcester at some point I will let you know, of if you're ever near Boston/south........

    Re: Wanted: Workshop stuff

Just something to think about and maybe it's just me. I don't think I would use my tools for both wood and metal working. A random cut here and there would be fine but anything that required some actual work I would want to separate my tools.

    Re: Wanted: Workshop stuff

Fyi, a local kitchen cabinet contractor in Southwick regularly puts removed cabinets out front of his shop, on sale for cheap. I bought not only base cabinets to make a workbench, but some large pantry type floor to ceiling ones too, which are great for storing things like hand held power tools. Other cabinet contractors closer to you may offer the same.
Cheaper than the raw materials and saves a bunch of carpentry work. I have homemade built in workbenches too and those can’t be relocated easily if I want to, whereas the cabinet method could be relocated pretty easily.

Thanks for the tip. Yeah, we've been hitting up places like Habitat For Humanity for stuff like that cuz we're also looking at putting some cabinets in our laundry room.
