    Question WTB: Beginner dirtbike/DS

I'm looking to get my wife onto a dirtbike/dualsport for this riding season.
Checking FB marketplace leads me to believe people are losing their minds. I'm not about to pay $3000 for a 2004 TTR230.

    Does anyone have a lead on a dirtbike like a TTR230, TW200, XT250, CRF250L, etc?
My budget is $2,000 and I'm in CT but willing to travel a bit for a good deal.

    Thanks!

Preferably but it wouldn't be a deal breaker if the price is right.

That's a tough one. Even not wanting a plated one your at the lowest end of everything. You can forget almost any Honda except for the oldest xr's or maybe a crf150. A tt is possible but I don't think a ttr is. Anything above a 200 is gonna cost you. They go crazy quick.
You might be the prime candidate for a Chinese 250 off Amazon. Look at Orion, Apollo or hawk. Even those are getting to be more money now but you might be able to get one delivered for under 2k.

    I recommend a Yamaha XT225, loved mine.

BUT...The mentality of "I am not gonna pay $XXX for YYY" in 2022 might be an issue. Shits retarded everywhere.

TaoTao TBR7 often gets (relatively) good reviews

On line forums available, eg, https://www.chinariders.net/

    Also, check YT for reviews.

I was on a similar search last year, and when I'd given up, a friend sold me a low-mileage dual sport that just needed tires. At the $2K price range, used bikes might need tires, tubes, chain & sprockets, steering bearings, carb work, clutch, busted and missing plastics ... on and on ...

5 years ago $2k bought you a machine that needed tires, chain, etc. I know, I bought a couple.
Right now, I don't know. Everything I look at seems to be priced much higher despite the condition.

Exceptions exist. A friend nabbed a DRZ400 for like $2500. But I think he was in the right place at the right time. YMMV. Good luck.

I was going to post a western mass cl listing for a clan looking crf150 I saw the other day, but it must have sold.

I thought it was a little high at $2500, but apparently not.

Asking prices are a little nuts, but are those bikes actually selling, or just sitting?

There are still decent deals out there, just gotta be patient and jump quick. I'd recommend checking advrider.com, there's always dual sports for sale for reasonable prices. It's a tighter community and largely older, financially stable folks, so you don't see nearly as much BS with pricing as you do on marketplace or craigslist.

Great call on the ADVrider suggestion. I found a bike for her on there. It's a bit over the budget but seems like an excellent deal nonetheless. Just have to drive up to upstate NY this weekend to get it.

We sold a CRF100F*, TW200, and WR250F for asking prices. Two of those were only advertised by word of mouth.

The buyers had been looking for months.
