AS an FYI (and you can find this info on www.hawkgtforum.com)
NEW rear shock $800.
Newer front end $500 (find a deal on an F4 you don't NEED an USD)
Hawk Racebike (usually comes with some spares, is jetted and has an exhaust) $1500 without above bits... around $2000-$2500 with depending on condition.
So basically you want a Hawk with suspension. You start getting into built motors, 700 kit, cams, (stage 2 heads are about $1000) and you start spending money for HP.
Bill Morey is running a stock motor and is in the LOW 20's... Stock motored race bikes with proper suspension and race spares are anywhere from $1500-$2500. If any of us Hawk guys can be of help we are all pretty knowledgeable and aware of where bikes are in the area.

I bought a street Hawk for $1300 and spent a ton of time and money to get it where it is now. You don't NEED to do some of the mods but the basics can add up. Like Doc said, rear shock and front end are critical. Subframe, tail, clip ons, rear sets, uni pods are the next level. Then of course radiator, VFR rear wheel, 520 conversion, exhaust, and steering damper are the optional items. It all adds up and I cringe to think what I am into this for.
That all said, I wouldn't convert another street again. I would buy a racer and tear it apart to see what it is. A lot of mods are done to this 23 year old bikes, nice to know what has been done.
And don't remove the Cush, in race applications they are useful or stuff breaks.
Good luck!
Oh, and I didnt mention the motor. Mine is still street trim, I will know more after this winter. Pistons, cams, crank lightening, porting, FCRs, etc etc. How fast you want to go? How much do you have to end? Lol.
