    WTB: Home Networking equipment

Currently have a pretty weak home network setup...

Just an Arris 3.0 modem and a TP-Link TL-WDR3600, both of which are coming up on 8 years old... (Jan 2015)

If you have anything better than these that you'd be willing to let go of, please let me know. I have a single floor house w/ about 1400sq feet. The Wi-Fi signal is pretty weak at the extremities of the house and the 2.4GHz signal craps out pretty regularly, especially when Sylwia and I are both working from home.

My brother works for Spectrum and helped to optimize the signal coming into the house (house was RIDDLED with splitters, we just got rid of em), so I'm moving downstream from there and getting a better system cobbled together.

If my current & future devices & needs are helpful to list out, lemme know. Would like to do this right the first time but also don't want to spend more than I have to for features I'll never use.

Would eventually like to have the house a little more "internet-ized" with a smarter thermostat, a couple of cameras, etc... May even go through the trouble of installing a couple of network jacks in the home office areas. Dunno if I should bother to add a network switch for that or what.

Take it away & thanks in advance.

Are you asking for used equipment, or recommendations on what to buy?

    Re: WTB: Home Networking equipment

    I'm open to either one...
If someone has some decent equipment that's an upgrade over what I've got that they no longer need because their system grew or whatever, cool.
If anyone has a solid rec for something new that's a great bang for the buck & fits what I need, I'm down for that too.

Side note: I've been considering a mesh system, but at only 1400sq feet of single floor living space, I'm not convinced I need to go that far just yet... unless someone's got a system they're no longer using.

Ultimately, I'd like to rebuild the system we've I've got with more capable equipment for around.... oh I dunno... under 300 bucks if possible? More if necessary?

    Docsis 3.1 minimum
    Powerful router or affordable mesh
A switch if necessary for the office jacks

Don't really think I need a whole lot more at the moment?

I'm only on a 100Gb plan right now, so...

I’m using a deco mesh system and love it.
Prior to this house 1 unit was sufficient for 1850 sq Ft 2 floor and basement and some yard so you should be fine with it.
Not too complicated but also not too customizable. Good price. Works (even with shitty spectrum).
I’ll trade you a deco for your brother to optimize my network lol

    Re: WTB: Home Networking equipment

Lol. Sadly, all he did was check the line into the house, confirm it was good, then bypass all the shitty splitters that were in the rats nest that the original installer completely half-assed, and gave the ONE... NEW splitter a solid ground. We only use one coax jack in the whole house, so wiring our modem directly to that line in from the street (it's the smoother, harder jacketed one) with nothing in between was enough to clear up a lot of our issues.

A quick google shows a lotta different Deco models. I'll have to do some research.

Much newer, built literally today, firmware exists for your router. It can fix a lot of issues on older hardware. I'm going to leave it at that because you need to know what you're doing before you reflash it.

I am in similar situation, but as well as getting a new wi-fi router, also gonna see if I can get TDS to replace their modem, both are probaby 14 years old, and I can't procrastinate more, I gotta run a hardwire to my house, from my barn where my network is. I have a burried conduit with a string, just gotta but the cat6 and run it

M5 is what I have Pete. Works good. If I were to buy now I’d go with the newest but M5 is solid.

    Re: WTB: Home Networking equipment

Pretty sure I've said this before elsewhere, but I'm happy with my NetGear Nighthawk R7000 (looks like there's a slightly newer version here). I've got 1GB symmetrical fiber and I've tested as high as 950MB throughput. My original version is AC1900, so not the fastest wireless in the world anymore, but that doesn't matter for 100Mbps WAN, and it's got good range for a 3 antenna box. It sits in the basement and covers my 1700sq/ft house without an issue, and even extends out to my detached garage. I can get 5GHz inside the house and 2.4GHz outside anywhere in my yard.

As for a switch, if 4 ports on a router isn't enough, just go on Amazon and buy a Trendnet or TP-Link basic switch. A $25-40 "dumb" switch is perfectly adequate for gigabit, you really don't need anything fancy for a home network. I think a lot of people overestimate their usage, and don't realize that the gigabit switches available for the past 20 years have been monstrously more capable than 99% of any home user could ever possibly hope to utilize to their full extent. The biggest limitation has always been internet connection speed, followed thereafter (and to a much lesser extent) by the router.

Where in your house is the modem and wifi/router?

Are you directly connecting to the router with ethernet cables from your computer or Syl's computer?

It's on one side of the biggest room smack dab in the middle of the house, but it's old and drops signals, an issue unrelated to position.

I'll sometimes run a cable down the short hallway from the router to the home office for whoever's working in there that day which seems to make it slightly more reliable. At the very least it keeps the hardwired machine online when the wifi shits the bed.

I just got this as my previous router didn't have the security protocols necessary for my mom to upload her charting as a visiting nurse. Works friggin awesome and with the one extender my garage now has Internet and I get it in my yard everywhere as well!

Amazon eero 6 mesh Wi-Fi system | Supports speeds up to 500 mbps | Connect to Alexa | Coverage up to 3,000 sq. ft. | 2-pack, one router + one extender, 2020 release https://a.co/d/biwhF63

What I did at home was 1) Move router to basement and use that as a splitter, 2) hardwire from splitter to my office, 3) replace router in living room with this from home depot. Amazing signal everywhere now.

If you're looking for cameras, I recommend these guys. Best value that I've seen.

    https://www.wyze.com/products/wyze-c...42646491627682

Haven't tried their updated one yet but pretty happy with the v3 ones we currently are using.

They are a software company that uses some solid facial recognition. Their nightvision with low light is pretty good since they are one of the rare few that offer Color nightvision. They also have adapters so that you can steal power from an outdoor lightbulb.

Paid 29 bucks a camera, with 8 bucks for adapters, uses microsd cards for storage and i paid 50 bucks for the year to have cloud access on my phone.

    Thanks.

From what little I know about them, the Wyze and the Eufy camera systems seem to the early stand-outs to me with no monthly payments for cloud storage... They've also both got smart doorbells which I'm considering. Might wait till Black Friday & see which one offers the best deal.

If you are going to do cameras and wifi, I'd go Ubiquiti.

The only issue currently is sniping them when they come in stock. They are perpetually sold out for most cameras.

A quick google search tells me Ubiquity cams are a little too $ for even this Security Professional's wallet.

The new G5 bullets are $99 each. In early release right now, but they are coming. G4 Instants are also $99.

    But yeah, it's an investment.

I'm in process of changing over all our locations for work from Ring/Wyze to Ubiquiti.

Yeah that sounds a bit steep for what I would want to spend.

Obviously no one's immune to stuff happening, but you've been here & have seen our neighborhood... I feel pretty safe. The only reason I'd like a couple cams is because the view of our driveway is SHIT from anywhere inside our house but the master bathroom and we've got 7 bikes in there now. I figure one there, one at the front door, and one or two in a couple of other spots only because... well if we're putting two in, why not a couple of others?

Ubiquiti will require an NVR. I recommend the Unifi Cloud Key Gen2 Plus, it's a pretty nifty little device that also runs the Unifi apps (you'll want both Network and Protect if you are investing in Ubiquiti). Really excellent pro-sumer devices.

I'm a bit disappointed that Ubiquiti went with MicroSD storage in the Dream Router vs a slot for a 2.5" HDD.

I'm setting my in-laws up with one right now and that's the only real downside to it vs a Cloud Key Gen2/Dream Machine Pro. But it has a full Wifi6 AP in it, and 2 POE+ ports for a couple more AP's.

A MicroSD card slot for NVR is a laughably bad idea. That said, 2.5" is also a bit of a pain in the ass in my small business corporate environment. Finding a >1GB 2.5" drive that isn't garbage (like the Unifi recommended 5GB Seagate consumer device that failed twice in <1yr) has been a challenge, so I finally just said screw it and went with a WD Red 4GB SSD. So far it's working wonderfully for our 4 G4 Pro's in the UCKP.

For home use however, a 2.5" drive should be more than adequate.

What am I doing wrong. We have the stupid wifi box from xfinity and it has signal on all 3 floors and out in the yard just fine. Am I not taxing it? I was planning on upgrading when I get my cameras and security system but it seems fine right now.
