I would keep an eye out for a decent shape DXZ400SM and pony up the cash to get it.

Reliable, good street bike and motardly fun. Just a little bit of a pig as far as tards go. But basically all the tard fun without as much tard headache.

They started making them in 2005 so you might be able to luck out and find one for 3k...
