WTB - Supermoto or Supermoto parts for 08 CRF 450

Posting this on behalf of a friend:

He's looking for a supermoto, budget probably in the $3K range, maybe slightly more.

He has an '08 CRF 450 that he is considering converting to a Sumo, but I've advised him against that...unless he can pick up the parts used

Which brings me to the second part of the post - so if you have sumo parts that would fit that model, lemme know.

Edit: The bike is strictly for track day use, although it see some race use if we can overcome the girfriendential veto.

I've never seen a sumo on CL for less than 5. Some good bikes with street titles and dirt wheels though for 3-4.

edit: now that I post that i see this though 2013 drz400sm immaculate you'd be hard pressed to find a 450 or ktm for under 5k though

Re: WTB - Supermoto or Supermoto parts for 08 CRF 450

    Thanks for the replies.

I added to the original post that the bike is for track day use only, so no title / lights / plate, necessary. Hopefully that opens up some opportunity on the lower price range, if anything by the laws of supply/demand.

Also he's not currently looking to race, although I'm working on that

I saw that somebody had a race ready sumo for sale here (LRRS428?). Looks like a well set up bike, but a little out of his range.

    Thanks!

Anybody have any thoughts on how adequate a wr400 would be power-wise?

My friend is used to riding a CBR1000 around the track...I know any sumo is going to pale to that but if my 520sx leaves him behind on exits / straightaways he will be seriously unhappy.

On second thought, maybe I should tell him to buy the 400

I'll ask the OP on BoRN for more details, but it sounds like he did the mods to make the bike street-legal, but not necessarily the mods you'd want to make it a serious track machine.

I still have this in my garage. Haven't really worked to sell it since the posts, but...

Ridden a few rain session in CT this past season. Hate to see it go, but would love to see it in good hands.

Although I ride and love a KTM Sumo, I have a lot of respect for the CRF's out there.

The reason for my advice is my impression that you take a $2-3K bike, add $3K to it, and wind up with a bike that is worth $3-4K. Add to that any time that's invested in researching / procuring / installing parts.

And don't the CRF's need to have the crank built by somebody like Falicon (like they are on KTM's?) Unless you're due for a bottom-end anyways, that sounds like an expensive proposition.

I know some people enjoy doing race builds, and chances are your race bike will be more competitive if you set it up exactly the way YOU want, but I don't think either one of those applies in this case. My friend is like me in that he's a desk jockey that knows a little about wrenching, but doesn't have a garage/shop setup or the time to enjoy doing a build. He'd probably wind up paying somebody to do at least some of the work (especially if it involved splitting cases).

Just my thoughts. If the logic is flawed, by all means rip it apart. I'm just trying to get my buddy a decent ride in the most economical way possible (considering both time and money)

The benefit to the CRF vs the KTM is CRF cranks are CHEAP aftermarket. Don't bother getting the cranks welded/etc, just plan on tossing a fresh one in every other season, or every season if you really pound the snot out of it.

He's leaning more towards a CRF anyways (that way he's got a parts / B bike if he's in a pinch).

That said, recently bought a CRF 250 for the ice....I have not had to check the valves yet, but the PITA factor for shimming the valves on the CRF vs. adjusting the valves on the KTM seems very high.

Any opinions on ease of wrenching on the Honda vs the RFS in general?

Re: WTB - Supermoto or Supermoto parts for 08 CRF 450

Tappet adjusters are alway cake compared to shim [over, under] bucket setups. No doubt. But on either bike it's not that hard to have the frame on the bench so I wouldn't sweat those minor details compared to the cost of a total rebuild of an RFS KTM vs a CRF.

Re: WTB - Supermoto or Supermoto parts for 08 CRF 450

Another vote for the CRF world.

As others mentioned the cost/availability of parts alone should lead anyone looking to get into a motard to the world of the CRF. KTM/Other European brands are sexy and go like hell but the parts cost can be significantly higher than for the belly button of dirtbikes the CRF.

I have two Husqvarna motards in my garage along with a bunch of spare parts, motors etc. and I still have a hard time justifying not picking up a CRF for track riding.
