btw, saying "Methinks the customer sucked in this scenario" can easily be misconstrued into a personal attack...... but not by me, cuz I know you didn't mean it like that....... right?

This information is not contained within the first post. Knowing that, it makes me wonder what the REAL story is now seeing how there's a lack of information from the get go.
Again, asked to borrow tools, answer = no
Instead of accepting that, it was obviously a great idea to "see if a chick has better luck". Not sure what the issue is here.
Pete- Slow your roll. If that's even remotely construed as a personal attack then I'd better get my "flag" button warmed up.
Don't worry bout it dude, I'm not about to officially warn anyone, nevermind you... Just know that all parties involved already got their flamings & you're not bringing up any points that haven't been brought up before.
read the thread if you're that interested.

First post tells me everthing I need to know. We don't get the entire story from the get go. What does that tell you?
To test a battery, you need a load. Doing that takes time. Time equals money. No money equals no time.
You think I was happy when a shop told me it would be $90 to have my truck's engine code scanned? No. Did I ask to borrow their scanner? No. Did I send my lady friend in to try again? No. Does that mean this particular place sucks? No. I now know that's how this place does business. Realizing that, I'll just go find a place that's within my budget instead of crying about it while diminishing the reputation of that establishment.
I guess the difference is I don't *expect* hand outs.
I'm done here.

Bergs, earlier in this post: Autozone scans for free.
One thing I think we have missed:
John, thanks for taking time to post a response. I think you offer insight we might not have gotten otherwise.
SOLUTION:
I believe Dave would have gotten a better response if he just explained what you did.
Maybe something like this: "I'd love to help. We have 4 hours worth of work to do and only one hour left to do it, we are swamped, but I don't want to leave anyone stranded, If you can pop the battery out I will throw it on the tester for free."
"Multimiter? yeah I have one but it's a friggin 350 dollar one and they are easy to fry if you do it wrong. Can you pop the battery out for me?"
Easy.
CUSTOMER SERVICE:
After working in the restaurant industry for many years, I wondered why you could serve good meals all day long for a week and nobody says a word. Serve just one bad meal and the whole town knows overnight. Why?
I think it is because we assume you know what you are doing, thus doing a good job is nothing out of the ordinary, but get something you did not expect and you want to warn all of your friends.
Thus, best business practice in retail is "Customer is always right".
Thanks again John, I think the more people we have on this sight that are in the business the better.

Gotta take the good with the bad. I've had people jump through flaming hoops to help me when needed, and I have literally had a door closed in my face when someone could have made some coin by taking a minute to get me a part.
My local shop is pretty decent though. The other that I like is a haul for me, but they're cool, great to hang out with and BS with...and without an appointment they inspected my bike while they were running at capacity. They are worth the better part of a day to ride over there. So, it can be done. So and so might have been having a bad day, pissy mood...etc. It happens, we're human.
weren't bewbz mentioned earlier ¿
That woulda got people to drop what they were doin![]()
It's funny as all hell, I go to a one man operation down the street (Morrison Cycle in Barrington); he is grumpy, dirty and ill natured.
He's also the best and most reasonable too!
I went in for a valve job and he argued with me! He did not think the bike needed it, so he argued with me! I yelled at him; "Look, I want the valves done, can you do it or not!?"
He adjusted the valves, clutch cable, throttle cable, chain tension, rear wheel alignment, and added lots of preasure to the front tire. Gave me a talkin to about the chain, clutch cable, and throttle play. Charged me $65.
I was tightening the chain too much and in doing so, threw out the alignment.
I have him do everything I can, and mention his business every chance I get.

Hot damn! I need to go see that guy. Can you PM me his number? I need a once-over for the bike before the riding season starts.

Funny, here I am sitting at John's desk AT Cycles 128, reading thru this thread.
I've been in the "service" aspect of this business, as well as a customer on the other side. I have my opinions, but they aren't to be posted on this thread.
For the people on this forum who know me, you can't deny the "service" I provide for those who ask. I used to do the same when I ran a shop. BUT, there are factors, that can sway the decision of the person who is asked, at the time of asking.
Hope to see y'all this summer!

I sincerly hope my Epitaph isnt something I did when I was having a bad day.
And I am SO glad I don't have to work in retail .....it can be hard to love more than one customer at a time...

Ride it a few miles, it might clean up. Priv's bike was doing the exact same thing when we went for a ride last weekend... but I didn't say a thing. Sure enough, it cleaned up after a few miles.
Hell, mine did the same thing after I washed it. Got a bit of water in the baffles & it smoked for a while just like that.

I can resist everything but Pete's mom.
I went to Parkway cycles last month to check out some jackets. It was 3 young chics working who doesnt know any thing about bikes, i guess all they do is help you find a size and ring you out. They stock mostly Icon and joe rocket stuff. The next day I drove up to seacoast and bought a dainese jacket.
