Re: Helmet choices Scorpion Arai or Shoei

I have two helmets that I use and like, for street riding, both cheapies; an HJC and KBC. My KBC is 2000 certified and old, but is my favorite. I got an 08, 2005 certified HJC to get on the track cheap last year.

I am currently shopping for a 2010 Arai to race in and for street. I like my brain, so I will put it in the best. My opinoin is based on research and prevailing opinion.

I have a Scorpian exo-700 right now and I love it compaired to my old G-Max POS.

Would love a Arai but I just don't have the loot to fork over for one.

I have both Shoei and Arai. I prefer my Arai Profile over the RF1000 Shoei but both helmets are fantastic. I've heard good things about Scorpion but don't have any personal experience with them.

Helmets owned (in chronological order): KBC VR1, Shoei RF1000, OGK FF4, Vemar VSR Carbon, Arai Vector.

    From best to worst:
Love my Vector. Will likely buy another one when it's time.
Really liked my Shoei, Vemar and OGK.
KBC was junk..... but at least it saved the back of my skull.

Love my Scorpion(s). Loved my Arai, which cost twice as much as the Scorpion.

Re: Helmet choices Scorpion Arai or Shoei

I crash tested an Icon helmet over the summer and it held up pretty well. I only received a black eye and a small scar on the bridge of my nose. Although I was happy with the protection for the cost I'm definitely looking to upgrade my headwear (no I'm not still riding with the same helmet). Obviously you get what you pay for, so I think my next helmet will be in the $300-400 range.

Love my Arai Corsair RX-7. Got it last spring online at almost half price. Soo much better then my old HJC.

The Arai breathes so well and is so light. Best off getting what fits your head the best.

Re: Helmet choices Scorpion Arai or Shoei

Have a Shoei RF-1000 and an Arai Corsair V. Previously had an Arai Profile.

Shoei fits snug, and a narrow shell, great for narrow heads. Not a ton of venting, and the visor hinge system is visible, but a breeze to use. Overall a good helmet. Liner material isnt the softest, and doesnt keep moisture down as well as some.

Profile was an oval shape, which felt great when I bought it, but eventually packed in. Great for round heads. I have since learned better. Was also somewhat heavy. Venting was fine, with plenty of options, and brow vents are great on hot days. A friend got the opportunity to crash test it, lowside... into a 40' ditch. Shrubs broke his fall, scratched the lens and mouth area, but he was fine. Which is why I got a new helmet...

Corsair V is the best helmet I have ever put on my head. Fits like a glove. Snug, but the right kind of snug. Tons of venting locations, and options. Extremely light, but somewhat loud. Earplugs take care of that anyways. Arai's have the somewhat trick visor system though, which I have found to be a pain for switching visors. The quickwick liner is great for moisture, and is very soft.

I recently tried on a Suomy and I loved it. No ear cutouts, which is different, but not uncomfortable. Velvet liner is extremely comfy. Very light, great visor choices.

I'd be interested in getting a Shark or another Arai.

I have one mishapen head hahahaha
I love my scorpion, EXO 7000. We found it to be a great price point helmet. What I do like is the venting is top notch, it's never fogged on me, it's comfortable and it is pretty quiet. Now 2 others in the shop bought Shoei and they fog on a heartbeat. I don't know how the new RF1100's are. They didn't like the pinloc either, thought it was distorting.

Arai. They have different profiles for different head shapes which is very nice. Helmets are reliable and comfortable. This is my current helmet and will likely be my next one too.

Scorpion, not a fan. Those quick release visors pop off in accidents and they are not the greatest quality. A tight fit loosens up very quickly as the padding squishes.

My favorite helmet was quite possibly my old Roof Diversion. It was an imported helmet, excellent construction, very solid and light. Crash tested and approved.

No brainer: Arai. I most definately like the Shark's RSR2...one of the safest ever made.

Profile is actually for long oval heads, not round. Might be why the Corsair V fits you better as that is somewhere between an intermediate and round oval.

Suomy Spec 1R (and extreme). crashed in them with no ill effect. curently on my third one. super comfortable, excellent venting. just really loud but ear plugs fix that.

Also currently have a Shark RSR2. very nice helmet too. just wish it had thicker cheek pads. a little tough to get my glasses in but the price was right.

Had a Scorpion EXO-700. crashed in soft grass/dirt (rear tire left a nice 6-8" rut) and got a concussion. it was nice till it was crashed in. lining wasn't as nice as the higher spec stuff like the Suomy, Shark or Arai but not bad. won't buy another.

I would buy an Arai RX7 but I can't get my glasses in. not sure how the new one is with regards to glasses.

never fit into a Shoei RF1000 so I never went any further with them but wouldn't hesitate to recommend a Shoei.

Re: Helmet choices Scorpion Arai or Shoei

I've been a Shoei owner for a while. My RF-700, 800, and 1000 all fit the same, which kinda led me to believe my head is deformed. Severely. Shoei's are good but they don't fit me right, oddly enough all 3 helmets above feel "off" one the right side of my cheek / lower jaw.

Tried on an Arai Haga replica a few years back...night and day difference. So when I upgrade....Arai it is.

I've had older models of Shoei RF helmets, a couple of HJC's and way back a Kiwi helmet. My current Arai Vector is by far the best I have owned, and the only one that ever really fit my head correctly. It's comfortable, quiet and vents well. Never going back to anything less.

Re: Helmet choices Scorpion Arai or Shoei

I've only owned "cheaper" helmets, such as HJC's. I was just recently fitted for a helmet and the Arai Vector is what fit best and was most comfortable for me. So thats what I'll be buying in the next couple of weeks. I'm done cheaping out on helmets although my HJC did just save my nugget when it bounced off a car bumper in december....
