throw away gear...meaning crash once then throw it away....

as for helmets...make sure it is fiberglass and not polycarbonate

    Re: Icon Gear

For 390 msrp I'd ditch that for something with a better reputation in a heartbeat. Icon isn't known for their build quality.

But that said it's DOT, SNELL '05 and ECE 22-05 certified, so if it fits his head like a.... well... like a helmet & he likes the looks, tell him to knock himself out (not literally)

    Re: Icon Gear

Isn't ICON owned by Parts Unlimited?

I have owned some ICON gear and I would say it is average at best.

Spend a few more bucks and get better quality.

    Re: Icon Gear

I crashed wearing ICON. Their textile pants shredded and since they aren't padded, the only padding I had was the skin between the pavement and my bones, so I bruised pretty bad. The ICON mainframe helmet hit the pavement too but held up perfectly. The shell didn't crack and the softer inside padding did it's job to keep me from a concussion. The face shield and vents were destroyed but who really cares about that stuff when you're asphalt surfing.

I don't know whether a better helmet would have helped or not. I just know the one I had worked and I replaced it with another.

    Re: Icon Gear

Cheese, thanks for the infor on the Icon pants. i was looking to buy a pair, but it looks like they dont do any better than regualr jeans. so it sounds like the helmets are ok for street use, and the jackets suck?

    Re: Icon Gear

i have a leather daytona jacket from them. havnt crashed with it, but the leather is thick and heavy, and the stitching is good. Wore it everyday for a season and theres no loose stitching, all zippers work, and the mesh liner is not torn or anything. Some people dont like their stuff because they dont really have a reputation yet. I wouldnt buy their stuff at retail but i got a good price on the jacket and im glad i bought it.

    Re: Icon Gear

    Jim,

I didn't really mean to say it was ICON's fault their pants didn't hold up. They were textile so I learned a lesson about how much better leather is (my leather jacket was merely scuffed on the back of the shoulder).

Bottom line, padded leather is the way to go.

    Re: Icon Gear

Figures a gixxer dude would be looking at icon shit.

Icon's for stunnas... they are looks over qual.

However it does seem that their quality has increased in recent seasons, probably trying to get rid of that reputation.

    Re: Icon Gear

Just don't let him buy POLYESTER textile gear. NYLON or nothing. The poly doesn't hold up to heat at all [friction = heat] also the tightness [Denier] of the wind is very important as well. You should never put on any NYLON with at least a 500 Denier but that in my opinion is kind of weak but passable.
