    Re: NHMS 2012 Suggestions?

    With regards to the pavement:

The track really needs to reconsider who is doing the paving, IMO.

Between the issues in T2 with new pavement that was just put in which was recently ground down plus the other issues with the seams between the old pavement and the new stuff and finally the three-lane access road which is not smooth by any stretch of the imagination yet has new pavement....suffice to say the quality all around is barely lackluster and new problems are essentially being created.

I say this as I'm looking at my road, which was recently repaved with a couple short sections that required some patchwork/ repairs, and I swear if anyone were to drive thru there with their eyes closed they'd be hard pressed to identify where the old pavement meets the new.

Sorry for the ranting but I just don't get it.

With all this time and effort being spent on making improvements to the surface just to have some other issue (or complaint) arise which requires more time and effort to go back and correct these certain new issues, why not just do it once and do it correctly the first time or get a company that can and will?

Again, my apologies for the rant but I cannot wrap my head around why all this new pavement goes down which then requires additional work or has some other issue pop up within a year or so...

The minor difference is your road doesn't hold SCCA events, etc...

Tighten up your line as you cross onto the new pavement. Hit the point and it's a glassy smooth transition.

For T3, how late is too late? Over the 1st transition? I trail past the rumble strip and to the point of the patch. Then I'm immediately back on the gas.

I'm not sure what that's supposed to mean.

Blindly tossing pavement at the ground of a racing surface then having to go back at least once to fix it within a year is the acceptable practice over taking the time to do it properly?

Grinding a corner down (T2) within a year of new pavement being put in is acceptable?

I can only hope that these 2nd and 3rd visits for repairs after the fact aren't being billed to the track...

Just about any track that hosts car events has this problem in the turns, heavy cars at speed running sticky tires through a turn put a LOT more sheer loading on the pavement than you see on public roads. That's where all the rippling, bumps, etc come from.

    Seriously...

I often lead a group of 15 - 25 folks up for the races and we're treated like a group of 25 one offs. Sometimes I just decide to go somewhere else.

And if you want to draw more folks some PR about the Club Races would be helpful.

but that still has nothing to do with NEW pavement that was put down as a bump.

It wasn't put down as a bump, it just formed one quickly due to what I said above.

go take a look at the triangle of new pavement a couple feet off the apex of 2. that was put down higher than the existing pavement. its been like that since they first put it down and hasn't been fixed. cars had nothing to do with it. this is a perfect example of what Bergs is saying, they should have done it right the first time.

the ripples in the braking zone into 3 were cause by cars so you can't blame the pavement company for that.

Not with T2 or the bumps in T1 for that matter.

The traffic is definitely playing a part however the rapid surface changes are a direct result of poor preparation of the substrate (the dirt).

Please view the quality of the access road for further proof of what I speak.

New paving company is my suggestion.

There has been paving issues at NHMS since it's inception. I can remember NASCAR races red flagged because the paving would get ripped up in the racing line in the corners. They blamed it on flat track for 3400lb stock cars. The Drivers HATED the track for years.

Bring back tight turn 10? At least for one weekend/season?

This one's going to get flamed hard, I know a lot of people were really against it last time it was discussed. I still think it was a fun change to the same old track.

Only if there is a "dropped weekend" brought back...

I remember seeing quite a few guys getting tangled together in the Tight 10, last time that we ran that. It wasn't the normal guys that you typically see pushing it to the limit and crashing... just victims/fallout of some yahoos trying to take every little advantage as possible by passing in an unsafe pass zone.

IF they want to change what is currently there, then build a completely new and safe road racing track without walls. My 2 cents.

Yeah... don't think there's many of us out there that wouldn't like to see that. It's kind of a given

Word. If you look at the transition onto the new pavement in T1, aim for the point. It's smooth if you're within about a foot of it.

didn't even notice last week. if you're right up on the curbing it was always fine. it was just the closer you got to the point of the new pavement is where it got bumpy.
