I was also planning on giving it a try this summer. Got the track bike ready, all the gear, tire warmers, stands, dot 2011 helmet. Now just waiting on school to end the 11th of May. My only question is. I work a lot during the summer. And cant really take time off work when i choose. Is it possible to show up at the track on a weekend when classes are and be able to take part?

you need better than just a DOT approved helmet. check the rulebook on www.lrrsracing.com there's a few different standards, chances are it probably is certified to one of them unless you bought a cheap helmet.

I'm almost 100% positive you can show up friday morning and sign up for the Penguin Basic School. the website should have that info. www.penguinracing.com

I believe that helmet is Snell 2010 rated so you're good there. And yup you can get your race license through the basic school as Ray said.

The helmet needs to simply be Snell Approved and less than 5 years old (and in good condition).

nope. not available through Tony's. You can do it through Fishtail Riding School. there just aren't any races right after doing that school like there is with Penguin.

Not correct. The Penguin final exam is for Penguin Students only. The final exam is a walk through/mock race so you get to see and understand a complete race experience before actually being thrown to the wolves for your first race (Complete Race Experience= Intercom Calls announcing the race, Pre Grid, warmup lap, Start Gridding, Number boards, Green Flag drop, Actual on track practice start, Turn 1 with the pack and then the laps with corner workers and flag stations, white flag and checkered flag).

I think its invaluable to have this "Final Exam" under your belt and will allow a new racer to be ALOT more comfortable on the grid of his/her first real Race.

Also, lets keep threads on topic and in the proper forum category... this is the Penguin School Section. One of the other schools you mentioned has its own category and the other is not a site supporter.

Regardless of all that... get out there and race!

This. The Go Racing program is no longer active; TTD and Penguin are collaborating.

My bad, I guess I don't understand their version of the school, (and sorry about the threadjack).

I guess I'll just plead ignorance, as I took Basic School with Penguin in April

    Re: Penguin cost summary

Yes, that is correct. Tony and I have always had a lot of respect for the other's program and decided to work together.

We are always looking to promote Penguin and what we have to offer. However, Tony also does a great job and is a good place to hear the point of view of some other riders - or simply to go out and enjoy the track. Any of the non-racers who ride with Penguin (or racers who are good with passing restructions) and want to have more opportunities to ride, Tony's is the first place that we send them. Likewise, Tony is sending riders who want to get licensed to us, as well as TTD riders who would like ride with us for a day to get some fresh ideas from a different group of instructors.

With both Penguin and TTD, you're sure to have a great day at the track.

If you did well, you could actually make a little back on your investment. Granted, it's a little risky to spend 50K to make 60K back....but most racers I know aren't adverse to a little risk.

On the other hand, many guys I know race pretty cheap. On a smaller bike in particular you can run tires longer, spend less when you fall and just keep it fun. Real numbers I've seen are under $400 a weekend for a frugal racer. Motard bikes are great for that type of thing....I raced a whole season on one front tire.

If you use your head and don't go crazy, racing really isn't that much more money than track days. You burn the same amount of tires, same amount of fuel and you can run on the weekends when you don't have to take a day off of work (this is pretty big). Three entries cost $180, with a free pit pass. That's cheaper than any track day I know. Assuming you have riding gear, the biggest hurdle is the startup with bike prep, stands, warmers, and a transponder...just to have the basics. Best bet, by far, is to buy a prepped race bike and lots of that takes care of itself. The new Novice class makes it easier for a new guy to just come and have fun.

The problem with these statements is that I led in with "if you don't go crazy"..... most of us are a little crazy, and the competitiveness takes over. But, then again, that's what keeps many of us coming back.
Eric pretty much took the words outta my mouth.

When I started racing, I did so on an EX500 and although I was trying my hardest to be competitive and win, I was able to do so on a relatively tight budget, thanks to the PTwins class.

$1500 for a race prepped EX500, another $200 for some warmers, $400 for a trailer, $200 for a hitch & wiring harness, another couple hundred for a race license and I was pretty much ready to go from track days to racing for well under $3000.

With a bike that hardly ever needed tires (I sold the bike 2 years later with the same tires Yeah, they were junk ) I was doing 3-4 races a weekend for about $200-300 a weekend, total cost.
