    Penguin Tech Inspection

Hi all, How is penguin for tech? Specifically tires. My SCV2's are about down to the wear bar. Do you think they would pass tech? See attached pics.

Not sure if Penguin would fail you for those or not. For peace of mind I replace my tires at the wear bar. Would you rather be rippin up the track or worrying if you have enough grip to push your bike?

I don't know if they will pass tech (my guess is they would), but clearly at some point soon you will need new tires. In the past, penguin school has had a pretty sweet deal on a new set of Dunlop DOTs as part of the school, and they can be mounted for free on site, if you remove the wheels from the bike. One time I took advantage of the deal even though my current tires weren't spent yet, so they provided the free/included mounting at a later date when I needed to put them in service.

New tires are cheaper than fixing a bike after a crash.....

Assuming you are not selling the bike and stopping riding... you're going to need tires for sure by the end of the Penguin day. In that case, I would throw them on beforehand and have peace of mind so you can concentrate more on what they are teaching you.

MTAG will be up there Thurs night, so if you want a new set of Pirelli's we can get them mounted Thurs night or Fri morning.

I think Penguins website says that tire must be worn 50% or less but I don't know how picky tech. will be.

I would replace those tires before the day.. and I'm a notoriously cheap bastid. I'm the guy that rides a motorcycle worth barely 50% more than the tires mounted on it.

Don't screw around with tires or brake pads.

    Re: Penguin Tech Inspection

Thanks guys. These tires still have a ways to go for grip. I ran the last set down pretty good an did not have any issues. Looking at either another set of these or maybe the superbike pro slicks. If I remember correctly the slicks should last a bit longer.
I also have a Q3 front tire with 1 track day on it. Forgot about that. Just buy the rear and I'm set. I've only run Dunlop Q3 front tire at my last track day as my SCv2 front was shot. I'm a pirelli guy.

    Re: Penguin Tech Inspection

I've seen those maintain grip(pace dependent) right down to the steel cords...but I wouldn't advise getting there.

As Tony said, we'll be set up from Thursday on, so come see us if you wanna just replace that and not have to worry about one more variable in traction management on Friday.

The Superbike PRO slick was actually replaced last year by the Superbike SC3 endurance compound; same concept though, additional longevity with a tradeoff in ultimate grip(at the sharp end of the stick). They are also priced a bit lower than the Supercorsa V2 and Superbike sprint compounds.

    Re: Penguin Tech Inspection

Regardless of which brand you choose, I'd strongly recommend changing those out. Once you start to get the cold tear that you've started on those tires, it doesn't "heal" (not at Loudon anyway). We have deals on Q3's that end up costing $200/set after rebate, and Tony will be up there if you want Pirellis. We want you to have a good day and not have the condition of your tires weighing on you as the day goes on. By midway through the day those things will be completely done.

I don't have warmers yet so this set and the last set had a lot of cold tear. Leaning toward the Superbike SC3's over the SPV2's. Reading the review sounds like they warm up faster and won't get as much cold tear. I ran the previous version of the superbike pros slicks and liked them.
