So, for some more details regarding this track.... like I said before, it has a lot of potential. Even though my riding conditions were less than ideal (wet track and slicks) I did several laps each way and got to get a real feel for the track. In short, the track layout is a good time. Lots of elevation changes, blind corners and increasing/decreasing radius corners - even an off camber corner. This is NOT a boring track by any means. Other than the front straight, I'm guessing a lot of the track will be 3rd gear, maybe touching 4th out back on the longer stretch. The track feels like a nice width, although the switchbacks as currently laid out may make for challenging passing in a couple areas. That may change down the road....we'll see how that shakes out.
There is a lot of work that remains. They need to clear anywhere from 20-80 feet of trees in many areas and take care of a couple of drainage areas off the side of the track. They also need to build pit in & pit out roads the length of the straightaway. However, the track principal seemed receptive to feedback and is a avid motorcycle track day rider. The first year is going to be track days only, and there is not planned to be full infastructure (like garages, etc...) until year two. Right now, I felt that the track was safer (in it's current state - with trees removed) and flowed a little better when riding counter clockwise.....but both directions had cool sections and presented their own challenges. There are multiple places where you are leaned over and turning and either going up or downhill.....good stuff.
They are going to do clearing, putting on the finish coat of asphalt and will install all the curbing and retaining walls by April. They are looking to use some big inner tube type tire walls - sort of a hybrid between the regular car tires you see and airfence. Interesting concept, I'm interested to see how they turn out. There will be a couple places where regular airfence is needed as well. I expect them to make all the improvements that we mentioned, and as such we are talking about one or two Penguin events here in 2013 - in the best case it would be 2 day events run one direction each day. Again, lots of potential here.
