"double clutching your bike makes you accelerate faster"

- My dumbass co-worker

"how can you even DO that on a bike?" i asked

I finally convinced him to explain it to me and what he described didn't even come close to resembling a double clutch. what he described was just whacking open the throttle while the clutch was disengaged & releasing the lever really fast. basically like clutching up a wheelie

sure it makes you accelerate faster for an instant, but not overall since the bike is out of gear longer than if you clutchless upshifted. "but that hurts your bike"

.... of course this is coming from a guy who had a 929rr that he bought for way too much money... plastic & frame damage and all

man, he's a bright one

So what do you guys do when someone's talkin bike or something you know really well & is TOTALLY WRONG?

I would just say something like "wow" or "neat" and change the subject. I have a lot of practice because my brother is that way with everything he talks about. Everyone knows he's talking out of his ass, but if you want the subject to end, just ignore the guy and pretend that you're listening.

It's kinda like being on a date with an annoying woman. You aren't paying attention to her, but if you want her to think you are listening so you can get some, so you pretend that you are listening and that you care.

yeah, i was gonna try that, but i just wanted to know what in the hell he thought "double clutching" meant.... i mean, i'm no professional, but i know about shifting techniques in bikes & cars and WHY you do them and i just had a masochistic need to satisfy my curiosity (as always ;rolleyes: ) as to what the fuck was going on in that empty head of his

Agree with them, emphatically. Then burst out laughing and walk away, shaking your head.

OH Tay Chilren gahta roun

If your bike or dragster has a steep powerband then clutching in to spin the motor up into the meat of its power band while feeding the most power with the clutch give the most rapid acceleration.

IN pro-stock days you took it up to 10,000 rpm and launched with a feathered clutch. Then bang the air shift so its still spinning in it power band.

Also please note for you launch fans most TACHOMETERS are damped and react slower then first gear so short shift the 1-2 shift as the motor is really screaming past power peak. MIght even happen in 2-3 shift.

He must've seen fast and the furious too many times. "Granny shiftin not double clutchin' like you should"

As far as I know, double clutching involves letting the clutch out a bit in between shifts to sync up the gears, push clutch back in, and then release the clutch. This mostly is used in 18 wheelers with the numerous gears and extremely narrow power band. Or more recently in my eclipse when it is sub zero out and the gears are frozen together because valvoline put in the walmart special tranny fluid.

Or I could be completly wrong...

Thats how I "double clutched" when i was driving a logging truck I guess I didn't know your throttle clutched for you I musta been double "gasing". Oh I have to shift my jeep that way too but only because the tranny is getting tired especially in the cold.

you should tell him when he wacks the throttle if he yanks the front he can jump the bike then direct him to the movie Torque to see how it's done.

Do they do this only on the launch or do they do it again on the 2-3, 3-4, etc.. shifts? It wouldn't seem to make any sense at all on anything except the launch, but I think we all know that is the correct way to launch.

Maybe the guy had false neutrals between every gear, then he could double clutch!

And if your tranny does have syncros, double clutching is a waste of time.

exactly... now is it single, or DUAL synchro?

maybe the tripple synchro mesh on my co-workers bike was wearing out & had to be replaced... i hear you can use the same stuff they use to screen in porches... that's good mesh right there

That works, only if you add the right amount of tri-glycerides to the oil.... But what happens if I change out the powerband??

From my experience when you double clutch a truck you let the clutch out when you hav it in neutral and gas it then press the clutch in to get into the next gear. Seems like it would be really hard to do after the 1-2 shift on a bike with no neutral between gears!

Depends on what the durometer rating of the rubber is...

"double clutching your bike makes you accelerate faster"

I thought that he was clear he did not really mean "double clutching" but rather slipping a clutch during an acceleration phase.

If you slip the clutch so that the vehicle stays in the motors maximum power band that is feed it enough clutch so the rpms don't drop off or rise to much. Assuming there isn't a rear tire smoke show then your going as fast as you can. If there is any doubt this is not health for most of the components to do this

"Double Clutching: is the act of trying to match the gear speeds up or down with the engine and vehicle motion by reving or slowing the transmission by clutching it into the motor. In the mean time the driveshaft is spinning as the vehicle rolls along.

Single clutching on an up shift of a non syncro tranny will have the motor and input shaft speed drop to idle whilt the tail stock is still spinning at speed. So if you know your vehicle and have a tach (so that's why there there other than "ain't it cool") then you can "double clutch once to neutral rev up or down second clutch new gear ) match MPH with RPMs of that gear and it slips in like BUTTAH.

"double clutching your bike makes you accelerate faster"

Rich, he said the words "double clutch" about 10 times... "Double clutching makes you accelerate faster".... and he clearly didn't know what it was despite telling me over & over he knew exactly what "double clutching" was. when i tried to walk him through double clutching to see if he knew what i was talkin about it was "Yeah dude, i know... i know how to double clutch a car, i can drive" (obviously not, since his new BMW didn't even have a front bumper for about a month cuz he rear ended someone )

What he described was popping the clutch while "over rev-matching" (if you get my drift)... TWICE (he told me to snap the throttle two times, then pop the clutch, i forgot about that part)... as if he's trying to clutch up a wheelie... Anyway, you know what i mean and u also know that's just inefficient because the clutch is disengaged for so much longer than something like a clutchless upshift. Yeah, it makes the bike lurch cuz the flywheel is spinning faster than the drive sprocket, but results is overall slower acceleration because the bike is out of gear for so much longer. U know what i mean though, i don't have to explain it.

Hehe, He was also the one that told me that new tires take AT LEAST 100 miles to scrub in no matter how you ride and that i shouldn't have gone to the track w/ new tires... he told me i'm lucky i didn't wreck. He's also had a number of other things that have come out of his mouth about bikes & racing etc that just make me think "oh man... you're a dumbass"

Oh well.... bottom line is, this dude has no idea what he's talkin about and if you ever talked to him for more than 5 mintues you'd know he's dumb as a brick, too and you wouldn't even bother trying to play Devils Advocate

HAH! oh & he also talks about how he used to ride w/ some guys that are in the Rough Riders

at least he gives me a chuckle

Why on earth would any one use the clutch on upshifting any way.. Its a sequential gear box.. Under hard acceleration pre load the shift lever with your toe.. blip the throttle ever so genlty and it practically shifts it self.

Nope we have "constant mesh" trannies....no need for syncros...
Drive and or driven gears are done with "drive dogs".
