Maine Rant, I know what you mean Rich W.

This is an absolutely true account. It is rather long.

Here goes.

Let me tell you a little story about my run in with Fryeburg Maine police officer.

I made a trip up to Bridgton Maine this time last year with the intention of spending a couple days at Bike Week and a couple more with my family at our vacation home in Bridgton. My wife and daughter were already there and awaiting my estimated arrival time of 8:30pm.

I headed out from work (Rockland, Ma) at around 4:30pm on a Sunday evening with a route mapped out that took me through Boston and rt 93 into NH. Once in NH I hopped off 93 and took some great backroads from the NH border up to RT 302. I was making excellent time and really enjoying the ride. Once I got onto RT 302 I was on the home stretch, a road I know really well, and I only had about 30 minutes of riding to go.

I crossed over into Maine and proceeded to head into Fryeburg. I went by Fryeburg Academy on my right and started to round the bend well withihn the speed limit. Once the road straightened out I opened her up a bit and passed a car in a passing zone. I proceeded to cruise at about 70 mph in a posted 50 mph zone. There were no cars in front of me, no cars behind me, The sun was setting and I only had two miles to go.

I decided to look in my mirror and I saw a flashing lights cresting a hill way off in the distance. I looked again and now it could tell it was a the Police, this guy was cooking! i glanced down at my speedo and it read 72mph. For a second i said to myself there is no way he is after me because there was no one on the road and i certainly didn't pass by any speed trap. I know thi because my Escort Solo2 has never let me down. So I started to slow down and pull off to the dirt shoulder. And here he comes screeching right behind me. I pull to a complete stop. By the time i took my gloves off to get to my helmet strap he was in my face.

COP: "LICENSE AND REGISTRATION!"

Me: stunned, "sure. can I get my helmet off?"

COP: "Get OFF THE CYCLE!"

I get off the bike with my helmet, jacket and backpack still on. He reaches over to the ignition and pulls the key out.
The cop is seriously stressed out, he's shaking and fumble my key onto the ground.

COP: still shouting, "STEP BACK TOWARDS THE CRUISER"

Me: no problem sir, can i take my helmet and back pack off please?

Still no response from him as he bends down to pick up my key.

COP: slightly lower tone, "Take You're Helmet and Bag Off And Set Them Down Behind The Cycle."

At this point I am like is wrong with this guy? He must drink way to much coffee or he needs to lay off the coke. Anyhow i do as I'm told and put my helmet and bag by the back wheel and step back to the cruiser. He then starts to empty my back pack and the tail bag onto the side of the road. And the DoucheBag has yet to take my license and registration.

COP: "Are You Carrying Anything I should Be Aware Of"

Me: No sir, I don't think so.

COP: "YES OR NO?" "ARE YOU CARRYING ANY NARCOTICS OR DRUG PARAPHANALIA?"

Me: No sir, I'm clean and sober. I do have my license and registration that you asked for Officer.

He then starts to walk back towards me.

COP: "Turn Around And Put Your Hands Behind Your Back."

Me: blank stare..... "Am I being arrested Officer?"

COP: "Turn Around!"

I turn around and he puts the cuffs on.

Me: "Can I atleast take off my jacket Officer."

COP: "You'll survive."

He reaches into my back pocket to get my license and reg. He starts rifling through my wallet. He then starts to explain to me why he has me pulled over.

Cop: "30 mph over the speed limit is an arrestible offense. I had you doing 90mph in a 50mph back near the Fire Dept/Police Station. I'm also citing you for passing in marked lanes and Driving To Endanger/Wreckless Operation of a motor vehicle.

Cop: "Didn't you see me back there?"

Me: "Where?"

Cop: "At the station."

Me: " I saw the Cruiser but it was empty. I'd be a fool to speed past a Police Station"

Cop: "YUP."

Me: trying to bribe him, he did have my wallet in his hands. "Is there anything i can do to make this right Officer?"

He then escorts me to the back seat of the Cruiser.

At this point I still have my Astars TZ1 Leather with hard armor still on and zipped and my hands are cuffed behind my back. Now the mosquitos are starting to feast on my face and neck. I must have looked like an epileptic to anyone who passed by.

He crams me in the back beside his rain gear, cowboy hat, fishing tackle box and fishing pole. I find that it is nearly impossible to sit upright so i somewhat lie down with my head near the tackle box that stunk like dead minnows.

At this point i see him outside on the radio reading my plate, and license #. Then the Bridgton Cruiser shows up.
i then start to worry, Oh shit, y wife is expecting me to be there by now. if i don't show up she'll think i got into an accident.

15-20 minutes goes by the Officer finally gets in the Cruiser with me. i had to beg him to have the station call my wife to let her know that I am o.k..

Wrecker shows up to tow my bike. It was painfull to watch. So painfull that i forgot about the 50 mosquitos that wre feasting on me.

The Officer gets in the car again and we head off.

Me: "So what happens now."

Cop: " I have to take you in for procesing."

Me: "Isn't Fryeburg in the other direction?"

Cop: "Oh, you're not going to Fryeburg. You're going to S.Paris Maine Correctional Facility."

Me: "Are you serious sir? How far is that from here?"

Cop: "Oh about 40 minutes."

I was so upset, angry and disappointed that i didn't know what to say or do. So I did nothing at all. I stayed polite and very respectful the whole time cause i knew that once they have you pulled over you're at their mercy.
I started to make small talk with him, told a few jokes, made him laugh. We seemed to be getting along pretty well. I tried to make the best of the situation.
He then said to me.

Cop: " are you comfortable back there?"

Me: "as comfortable as I can be with cuffs and a armored jacket on."

Cop: "No, i mean tempreature wise, is it cool enough?"

Me: "actually it's nice,, thanks for asking."

I then heard the nice soothing hum of the A/C disappear and i instantly began to sweat. MO%^$R F&#!ER !!! i thought to myself. The bastard turned off the A/C. I was sweating my balls off for the last half hour of the ride.

The whole ordeal cost me just over $2,000. They dropped all charges except for the speeding which is a mandatory 30 day license suspension in Maine.

My Advice: DON"T SPEED IN MAINE!

What were the "other charges", aside from speeding? Were you actually going 90 MPH? Was this cop about 20 years old?

Sounds like the cop was a hardcore asshole. I would have a chat with his chief about his attitude, which was escalating the situation.

He
claimed that i was doing 90 in a 50. I also supposedly passed 2-3 cars in a row at that speed in a no passing zone. Passing at that speed is considered wreckless operation/driving to endanger.

What really got me is that he said he "clocked" me at 90 in a 50. Why would he "clock" me when he had a radr gun in his cruiser? Also he was never close enough to get an accurate estimate of how fast i was going.

I do admit i was speeding but there is no way in hell I was going 90. When I looked at the seedo it read 72.

The guy was just a pure PRICK! He must have been in his very early 50's late 40's.

Sounds like the cop was fat kid in high school that got picked on and he's still trying to sort it out or something.

Thats bullshit.

I got popped in Me. one time (in a cage) about 12:30 on a Friday night/Sat AM after a service call in Belfast went awry. I was probably doing similar speed (70 in a 50/55) and was the only person on the road.

On a straightaway about 2 miles long I see another car coming in the other lane and drop it to about 60-65. Car (sheriff I notice now) goes by me, and about 500' past my truck jams the binders and bangs a u-turn, rides up my ass and lights me up.

Lesson: Don't speed AT ALL up there. They have nothing better to do.

The only reason I remeber the entire dialogue is because I couldn't believe it was happening.

I know being a Police oficer has it's difficult moments but what the HECK! I didn't personally treat him like shit.

If I knew then what I know now I would have never stopped. I would have easily been at my house having a beer by the time he drove by my place.

Don't take offence to anything i say but reading your first post, I don't think your answers to his questions were what he was looking for you to say If you in fact said what you typed above to the cop, i'm sure you came off as a smart ass and he picked up on it. Not the smart thing to do to try and get your way out of a ticket, especially an attempt to bribe... Also speeding like that in/near a town (assuming you were in town because there was a police/fire station) has a certain disreguard for everything around you (are you buddies with richw? ) and i'm sure he took that into considderation as well....
Simple "yes sir" "no sir" type answers goes a long ways in a traffic stop IMO.
I've had my share of tickets in the past (even in Maine) but i've also gotten out of my share of tickets by simple yes sir/no sir answers. They don't want to hear anyones lines of shit, i'm sure they've heard them all.

Trust me when I say this. I in no way said any of my above comments in a disrespectful or sarcastic way.

I know that whenever anyone is pulled over by any L.E.O. you are at his mercy so you'd better start kissing ass. Being a wise ass only makes matters worse.

The only reason I asked if I could remove my helmet and back pack was to let him know where my hands were going to be. Same thing if you get pulled over in a cage. Always turn on your interior light (if night time) and keep both hands on the steering wheel when he approaches your vehicle. Officers want to know where your hands are at all times.

The $2K was for the lawyer, court fines, impound/towing and license reinstatement.

Well, I live in this Maine, I can say, that getting pulled over up here sucks! I've almost sold my bike a couple of times because I figure my luck is going to run out one of these days and I'm going to get tagged with a good one...I'm not saying speeding is right, or go on this long rant, but there are police everywhere up here (well, below Augusta, north of that, and you'll have a better situation), they hide, they'll pull you over for very minor offenses, looking for a big score, and most of the towns in Southern Maine have a zero tolerance for speeding...Sorry to hear about your incident, and from being from up here, I'm not suprised at all...

Not saying you were disrespectful to him, but you gave him A LOT more than the "yes sir" "no sir" answers he was clearly looking for

i agree with r7..

if that was me, i'd shutup and only answer accordingly. implying any kind of bribe is just rediculous.. that probably just pissed him off even more.

other than those two things, the cop sounds like he sucks at life and he knows it.

I totally agree that the bribe thing was ridiculous but I was already in cuffs and didn't have much to lose.

It's not like i said; "hey officer, how much is it going to cost me get you to forget this whole thing happened?"

On a side note. Once we got back to the correctional facility around other deputies he even commented on how much of a gentlemen I was and he wished all his arrests were so easy. So, no I wasn't being a smartass or sarcastic.

She was not amused.

To add to it my in-laws were with her at the house. So, naturally who does she bring with her to bail me out?
Dear old Dad of course.
He thought that a married man with a child and a motorcycle was ridiculous before you should ask him what he thinks of it now.

If I knew this was going to happen I would have cracked open the throttle.

At the time i figured; o.k., you got me. I'll take my ticket, pay my fine = lesson learned.

If I for a minute thought that he would grossly exaggerate my speed I would have gunned it, pulled the bike into the garage and just sat and waited till he drove right on by.

Oh well, what's done is done.

Post the officers name?

Keeping this in the back of the mind.

Next time, there is a road that goes behind Fryburg Academy and the baseball / playing fields.

It effectively makes a square around the academy using side roads and 302.

About this time I'd use the private grounds for placing some distance between him and you.

Next would be the ski area access roads by the lake East of Fryburg.

Can't catch what he can't see.

At least you can get Wendy's until 1:Am in SOuth PAris after getting bailed out.

A few months ago I watched the South Paris guys out by the town line towards Bridgeton work some kids over in their cars.

It was like they were trying to be on the TV show cops.........
Reckless to say the least......

Do you think it's wise to post his name?
I purposely avoided doing that because if he happened to do a yahoo or google search of his name this thread will pop up. Then he will really have it out for me.

You really seem to know the area like the back of your hand. You're probably familiar with my house too. It's right on 302 in Bridgton directly beside the public boat ramp, opposite side of the lake as Shawnee Peak.
