annual brake spooge post

Well its its half passed the riding season

If you have been doing some miles especially if you rode through minor wet pavement

You have dreaded brake spooge.

Coating your rotors and pads is road oil and tar. This is genuine fumunda like you would find on a blown wheel bearing.

If you went down a newly gravel and oiled pavement you got it instantly.

So get a can of carburetor (grandpa will explain what these were) cleaner and some paper towels and go to work. Soap and water don't touch this. It will probably take about 3 trips around before the towels come back almost clean. Unfortunately if you don't dissasemble the brakes there will remain a smear on your pads... if your finicky do again next week.

When your done take her out and do a couple of good stops you will notcie that 1 finger braking has returned

While your down there look around

Silly me, I've always used Brakleen to clean my brake rotors. Who knew they were, in actuality, carburetors?

Does this mean I should use the Brakleen to clean my float bowls?

How many bikes you've had KHAM?

In the two years or so I've read this forum
I've become a better rider, and I know that KHAm has bought at LEAST 50 bikes..... change rotors? HA!!

don't worry Kham, I don't clean mine either, but I pay for it, I've replaced my calipers as many times as I've replaced the pads

Well contrary to the label most people consider carb cleaner as the universal quick solvent

Works great and now only costs $0.88 per can at wally world.

Also while your in critique mode tell everyone there is no need to assure maximum braking ability

just never thought of taking the brakes apart and clean.

is the carb cleaner safe for brake parts? brake cleaner tells you it's safe.

I consider Brakleen to be the universal quick solvent. In fact, a lot of places now sell it their generic knockoff as "Brake and Parts Cleaner". It's good stuff, pretty much 100% tetrachloroethylene, nice tough grease solvent that doesn't leave a residue. And it's something around a buck a can if you get the generic.

Carb cleaner, on the other hand, is a big old cocktail of nasty stuff designed to get rid of whatever junk happens to be lying around in your float bowls. It also tends to leave a residue, which makes it not so good for rotors.

Carb cleaner seems to work great on carburetors, but for a general purpose cleaner I'll stick to a simple solvent, and that's brake cleaner.
