Track helmet Question

Hey, does anyone know why the limit for a useable helmet at the track is 5 years?( ie: the helmet can't be more than 5 years old)
i know a helmet deteriorates over time and crap starts to fall out from the inside but what if its a helmet thats never been used or only been used a handful of times? Does it still deteriorate the same way thus rendering it unsafe for the track?? Thanks

yup. From what i've gathered, over time, the material inside degrades. It can become brittle (not Brittish thank god... damn Brits ), flakey (like a dumb bitch) and less protective.

It's not like a black & white thing where 5 years is up & all of a sudden it goes skunked like a beer, but as time goes on it becomes less effective if you should take a spill. The more you use it, the more it gets dirty. The sweat, salts and oils from your head/hair penetrate the foam, reducing it's impact capacity. The more you use it the earlier you should replace it.

Just ask Hardcore, he knows all about defective helmets

my helmet was not defective---you get what you pay for!!
it is/was an hjc cl-12 costing $100. + very comfortable + good looking! BUT I found out the hard way it only protects like a $100. helmet!!! + I don't buy that all Snell approved helmets protect the same!

I'm going back to my Arai RX7RR4---the best (+ probably most expensive) helmet out there!
in fact I just bought one on E-bay (brand new for $240.---a $700 helmet)---not my colors but I can settle for it!

P.S.---hey FIREFAG,this is posted in the WRONG place!!
