best Place?

where is the best place to buy a chain and sprocket setup for my bike? looking for the best value, not necessarilly the cheapest but the cheapest that is not crap. must be steel sprockets.

Also opinions on chain link types would be helpful. Stock sprockets are still good after 18k miles (i just want to go a tooth down in the front and 2 up in the rear) and general concensus is that the chain is wasted (checking it out more thoroughly tomorrow after work).

So, what places have you found with some deals.

or.....
Sprocket Center....Talk to Brian

Decent prices, excellent service, and delivery was FAST!
No bullshit from this guy.

I ordered a AFAM / RK 520 kit for my TLR.
Stoopid me forgot that Marchesini rims have a different bolt pattern, got a sprocket for a stock TLR. Gave him a call, and had the correct sprocket, the next day. He told me not to worry about getting the other sprocket back to him right away, but I sent it back next day air anyway. They credited my account 2 days later.

who is deb?

I have looked at the internet but they all seem to have the same deal for my bike.

and i was also looking for someone possibly local to minimize time and also give someone we know and like some business rather than some random internet dude if possible.

and i am looking for a chain and sprocket set not just the chain, i am merely saying i am pleased with the wear of the steel sprockets and really don't want/need aluminium

Brian...? what is the link/number for sprocket center? or send a PM with a price and way to contact....

Plastow Motorsports!

I think there may still be a nice member here that can help you order what you need and expedite it overnight if they do not have it in stock! That is if she is still working there p/t??

www.sprocketspecialists.com is where I have gotten my sprockets from and I have been very happy with them.

Find an R6 Forum and ask around. I find great deals for my ZRX thru the ZRXOA forum.

i would go with a good quality al sprocket on the rear (my renthal is holding up well after ~10k mi). keep it lubed and it will last a little longer.

if you want the most longevity though, you want steel. if you want steel, sunstar is the way to go.

good luck.

"Deb" is from sportbike technology and is on this board under vendors... ooorrr... you could just go to a dealership/shop and order some steel sprockets from sprocket specialists and a chain from RK

why are you going down 1 and up 2? you trying to wheelie?

lots of the people on the other forum i am on that is dedicated to my type of bike recommend it and say it should have come that way from factory. Yamaha also had a press release back in 2000 or sometime like that saying that the optimal gearing for that engine is 14/49 and were considering changing it but the R6 was so popular that they never bothered changing anything except the color and graphics.

+1 on this one. I just picked up steel front and rear sprockets for my CBR for $76 w/ shipping.

As far as chains go, I just ordered a D.I.D. 525ERV 120 link for only $143 at www.indysuperbikes.com

What did you end up getting?

(chain size? chain brand & type? sprocket brand & type?)

Just curious.

If you've gone 1 down 2 up you're going to need a speedo healer too. Unless you're real good at math and want to keep subtracting ~17Mph from indicated all the time.

I did the same thing on my gsx-r600. It was kewl being able to wind out first and almost second before having to let off the throttle to avoid the po po. If you do a lot of highway riding, which I'm not proud to say I did, you may get kinda tired of turning ~9K in 6th at 70Mph. I ended up changing it to 1 down 0 up. That was a nice compromise. I also had Vortex sprockets which only lasted 6K miles so there were lots of opportunities to change.

I like RJ's.

Get what you pay for?? The 525ERV retails at $199. I got it for $143, so I got a pretty good deal. The only place I could find the sprockets was directly from sprocketspecialists.

Yeah, but I got over 21,000 miles out of my last AFAM kit,
so I guess I really did get what I paid for huh?....

The YZF is front wheel speedo driven, no healer required.

what will change with the gear ratio is the top end speed (top @ 136 mph).

a loss of @ 11 mph at top, and the tach will increase @ 1000-1500 rpm's per gear. ( shorter shifting range.)

I got the 530 14/49 combo...... JT steel sprockets, with a 110 link DID -gold- VM X-ring chain for 169 shipped, had it in 3 days.

the bottom end sluggishness/chatter out of first is gone, although too much throttle makes the front end light.

I really enjoy this setup over stock 15/47, and have only noticed one drawback....

I have to stop WOT in first.....

I dont reccomend the 520 series on this bike, unless you are religiously doing track days.

So with that gear ratio and going up 2 in the rear is the 108 enough chain??

I noticed you went longer.

the chain i gave you was a 110 as well. i have heard the 108 is long enough but i figured it is easier to cut links off if need be than create them while doing the job.
