which straps to tie down bike in a ranger?

So I finally got a '91 2wd auto ranger for winter/bike carrying, but are any particular straps better than others for securing the bike?

Can I just go to wal-mart and get any kind in the auto department?

And how many will I need?

I also plan to get a canyon dancer bar harness.

What do you have for tie points in that truck? I had to get some funky things that went inside the stake pockets (not the kind with the rubber blocks!!)

I prefer Ancra, they are worth their weight in bike plastics.

if you have to use the walmart or home depot ones, I try to get the ratcheting type with as much overkill as possible strengthwise.

To haul my CBR 600 in my trailer I use a canyon dancer over the grips. They mess up the grips a little, and I have heard that pieces of PVC pipe help with this. From there I use Ancra original tie downs, after I have them pulled down I tie a half hitch to keep them from backing out. I'm paranoid, so if it's a long trip I'll take black tape and close the hooks, this makes sure they don't jump out. I also tie down the back of the bike with tie down extensions through the rear peg mounts to another set of tie downs.

Use soft ties or a Canyon Dancer. If you put the canyon Dancer on correctly It wont hurt the grips. Attach the tie downs so they pull the slightly forward, and as far out to the side as possible. Use another pair at the back angled mostly out to the side. You don't have to tie it down real tight, just enough to keep the forks about half way through the stroke will do. I use only Ancra brand tie downs. In 20 years I've never lost a bike and carry 6 in my trailer and two in the back of the truck. Always use a wheel chock that will keep the wheeel from turning. Black & Gray Design make the best wheel chocks, or you can bolt a Bed Buddy that has cut outs for three front wheel and welded on tie down hooks. I can get every thing you need if you can't find it locally, and I can help you bolt on the chocks or Bed Buddy.

I use the ratchet type 2 in the front and 2 in the rear just to keep her centered. With a set of these soft extenders on the bars to avoid any metal on metal.

ratchet type are BAD NEWS... you either dont tighten them enough or you tighten them too much. i always use cam straps with canyon dancers. i dont usually worry about the rear. bout you run a ratchet type here. you only need one and i used to run mine across the bed over the swingarm. you dont need to compress the rear... just keep it from hopping

i use this in the front, you can get them from Parts Unlimited or Tucker Rocky. acts as a wheel chock and tie down points and you bend the front of your bed from tying down the bike. its called a box bar

the trick I use with my ratchet type tie-downs is to get em taught, then get on the bike, grab the front brake & try to push down on the suspension... if I can push it down more than a 1/4 of an inch or so I give it a few more clicks. I then use one on the rear tire to pull it back and hold it down.

I still need a proper front wheel chalk, currently i'm wrapping another tie-down around the front tire... it's better than nothing but it doesn't work all that well. It's never gone over, but I've had to pull over a couple times going to & from the track to straighten things out.

I made one of these with the help of Ftrain and it works mint. It holds 3 bikes and give you plenty of tie down hooks. It only cost about 20 bucks n metal at the steel yard.

I do exactly this with the stuff that CitizenFrye suggested, and have had zero problems.
