Storing the bike in a condo?

Hey guys just curious if anyone stores there bike in there condo for the winter. I currently live in a tiny apartment I was thinking about just rolling the bike into the elevator and into the living room. I figure it'll be safer then a storage unit, it'll always heated and I can sit on it, look out the window druing a snow storm and pretend like i'm riding, j/k. Do you guys think there some mass law that will restrict that?

There may not be a law against such a thing. However, I'm not sure that your landlord or management company would approve.

It's been done before. Drain the gas outta the tank and the carbs (unless it's FI) and you got yourself a prime seat to watch motorcycle racing on the TV during the winter.

drain the gas take? I thought you were suppose to top off the tank to winterize it?
Yeah i don't think the management company will be very happy about it. That's why it'll be a late night mission. What they don't know won't hurt them.

if you're keeping it in your condo, why would you winterize it?

Drain the tank just in case it leaks.
So if you have a fire your gas don't help the fire.

Take the plate off it & tell the management company its a chair.
I would not leave gas in it.

an empty tank (full of vapors) is more likely to be a bomb than a full tank

It's illegal, you'll lose out on any insurance claim if some thing happens on or to the property. You cannot store a motor vehicle in side a dwelling. Even if you call it a chair....Gas or no gas, the fire marshall will have a coronary.... I have to jump through flaming hoops just to get the proper permits to have complete bikes inside my shop, which is zoned commercial A1. Chances are nothing will come of it but if some thing did happen, or a neighbor complained about the smell, you're toast.

Would it be covered under renters insurance?

Hmmm, Randy and Pete pretty much nailed it, especially Pete. Following Randy's lead, if you were going to take that chance, this is what I would do. Do your oil changes, and make sure it isn't a dripper. Drain the gas tank and run the carbs or FI dry{not sure on that}, then actually drain the float bowls{carbs}. Lastly, on the point that Randy made, let the whole thing air dry outside for a couple, three days, so there won't be any fumes, sniff it if you have to.. There still aren't any garantees. I used to store my bike in my basement every year with no problems, using a bunch of common sense. In this day and age though, as Pete was mentioning, maybe not a good idea.

The vapors of gasoline are what burns. May be before your time, but there was extensive drunken research done at the race track one particular weekend years ago. Gas does not burn, vapors do...

Exactly. Just like wood or anything else. Materials have to reach a certain temp in order to vaporize and it's the vapors that burn.

If the ratio of gasoline to air is less than 1.4%, then the mixture is to thin to burn. Likewise, the mixture cannot burn when it contains more than 7.6% gasoline because it is too rich to burn. A full tank of gas is more likely to fall into the 'too rich' catagory since there is not much air.

Has anyone tried the trick where you cup your hand and fill it with lighter fluid and then light it? It's possible to hold it for a brief time without being burned because as the fluid turns to vapor and burns, it burns from the top down. The flame is occurring in the cloud of vapors above the liquid. I wouldn't suggest trying this with gasoline though.

Storing the bike in a condo?

I'm kind of in the same boat. I'm moving this month and hope to get a place with garage storage. I'm not paying to store the GS! I pictured for a second rolling it up the steps and into an elevator ... then reality struck and I began to picture myself outside in a foot of snow trying to do a valve check with mittens on....

I suppose it wouldnt be so bad leaving it under a cover outside because I can reinstall the centerstand and put the front on a cinder block... except I'm doing a ton of work to it this winter and I'm already scrambling to get it back together. I'm probably gonna end up riding it 40 miles to the North shore with no front caliper and a flashlight taped to the forks...
