what color?

bad news is

a week ago, I found my 6 day old 07strom in black tipped over in my barn, dent in tank and broken mirror, ($924 damage)

insurance has already looked at it,

a new tank in black or metalic gray is $781, and a new tank in yellow or silver is only $635

the color I like yellow is on back order, but silver is available right away, or should I suck it up and spend the money on black,

my deductable is $250, but between my discount and replacing with a cheaper color, I should have money left over

I think you should go for the replacement in the original color especially since you are using your insurance.

bike is not registered yet with regular plates, I can change color when I register it

why would insurance care what color it is ? or make any difference

Are you going to have the tank a different color from the rest of the bike to save money? If so why bother fixing the dent? It'll look like crap either way.

Considering you will probably be looking at that tank for the next several years and 200,000 miles, I'd get whatever color you want.

Can you ride the bike like it is? Ride it around until the tank you want comes in.

why would 2 tone look crappy, yellow ones are actually yellow & black anyway, I would just have a different ratio of black to yellow

even my black strom has some silver, maybe I should get the silver

yes, I am riding it minus one mirror, the broken mirror mount should be here soon, I can even put my tank bra on and cover up the dent

My tires are black and my frame is silver but I wouldn't put a black or silver tank on my yellow bike. So what are you asking us then. If you don't want to spend the money then don't fix it.

I'm not talking about tires & frame, most of my plastic is black, but not all, some is a dark metallic silver/gray

Randy, I would go with the stock color it came with. if it takes a couple of weeks to come in, so be it.

By the way, I can get that fuel tank much cheaper for you if you want to save some moolah.

derek

not sure, I had a bad day over all

it was snowing, in morning I ran some errands and ended up accidently locking myself out of my cage with the keys in ignition and engine running, I busted a rear window to get in

later in day after it stopped snowing, the power went out at my house, couldn't get generator started (stale 3 year old gas maybe) went to gas station to get fresh gas, upon return I find the bike tipped into a ladder inside my barn

only thing I can figure is that while fumbling in barn with flashlight looking for gas can, I set off a chain of events that ended up tipping the bike

busted window was an easy fix, with 2 E30 parts cars in my yard, took longer to vacuum glass out of back seat than it did to swap the window

I can get the tank much cheaper too, but maybe not as cheap as you ? how much can you get a black tank for ?

I plan on taking the dented tank to a local body shop and getting it repaired and ENLARGED if possible, if I can get it to 8+ gallons (from 5.8) then I wont get the auxillary tank I was thinking of

Randy

I feel you; your new baby has been hurt

Just buy the brandy new black one.

Get her back 100% and move on, anything else will remind you of that constantly.

Double check that the stands aren't near a tipping point... buy the center stand

Rich-

it was in a "bike grab" wheel chock, but my barn floor is still dirt

if it has fallen to the floor it prolly would have been undamaged, but there was a ladder leaned against the wall next to it that it fell into, never hit the ground

I think I bumped into it in dark, no electricity and a shitty flashlight

centerstand is a waste of ground clearance and would not have prevented this

You may want to consider getting one of those extra capacity fuel tanks like the owner at the Crossroads of Time at the 'Gap.

I think he could put 8 or 10 gallons and it was that see through plastic so he could tell his fuel level at a glance.

He crashed on it a couple of time and just scuffed the plastic.
It looked like crap but was functional as heck.

I googled but forgot the brand name and can't find it.

Seriously though.

Randy, For what you plan to do with that bike I would take the ins. money. Bring the dented tank to the body shop for "enlargement". And pocket the rest of the money. Why on earth would you need 2 tanks. Its not like you are looking for the bike to have resale value, you are going to ride it into the ground, besides you will more than likely have a couple tip overs on in the dirt anyway. So who cares. Dents , scrapes and scratches are like trophys on adventure bikes. You would just need a good story to go along with the dent.

I saw a vstrom before that the guy used rubberized bedliner paint to paint the bike with. It resists scratching thats for sure. He must have had a few tip overs here and there and decided to fix it once and for all.

don't know if it's the same one, buy my dealer sold one to a guy who did that, and he brings it in for service regularly

actually, that's what a couple of the guys at my dealer have recommended to me

I want a second tank so I won't have any down time while I'm getting my dented tank enlarged, then after I get my enlarged tank, I'll ebay the extra one

it looks as though a couple gallons could be added as forward extensions of the tank without changing it's outside apearance
