Before I start spending my daughter's college money....

Does anyone know where I can buy a kit to convert a Suzuki DRZ400SM to the off-road carb cheaper than this?

Fallon thanks you.

I wouldn't mess around with this mod. If you are going to do it, go with the TT kit and get it set up right the first time.

However, if you want to hold off on the new carb then go with a full RS-3 or ti system and the correct jetting as well as the airbox mod and see where you are. Its a pretty good bang for the money, although Im sure the fcr is as well.

I've thought of trying to piece it together from e-bay stuff, but by the time I'm done, I'm not sure how much cheaper it would be.

I've used a "cobalt" jet kit on a couple bikes I've had and had the best results with them. And they're cheap too, I think a bit...eeer jet is less than 2 bux

What have you done to it so far?

Do you know what your current jet sizes/needle/clip positions are?

It has a stage one jet kit (I dont know what manufacturer) and a K&N air filter. This didn't do very much, I'd recommend skipping it if you are thinking of doing some work to yours.

The chronology works like this:

1. Bought bike and ride it for a while - ran fine but slow.

2. Had mechanic install jet kit before a track day.

3. Let bike sit for about three weeks; bike suddenly ran like crap.

4. brought bike back to said mechanic; the bike now runs ok, but backfires and seems to run out of fuel at weird times. Runs good enough to ride around, but cuts out an inopportune moments.

I knew these bikes came with crappy carbs, and I figured I would have to spend about $1000 on a carb and a pipe to make it have decent power; I just haven't gotten around to doing it yet. And I am planning on running this bike at VIR in April, so I want to get things sorted out before then.

We can make your carb work well for your bike. The crappy carb saying is a cop out for guys that don't want to spend the time to tune the bike.

You need to
Find a DRZ forum and tell me where it is so I can check out some "other" peoples results.
1 Pull the carb
2 Pull all the hets
3 Write down the jet sizes
4 Go buy all the stock jets
5 Call me and say you did
6 I'll come for a ride
7 Install stock jets
8 Let me take it for a spin
9 We go buy new jets
10 Pull carb again
11 Install new jets
12 Test ride
13 Re Jet

Viola!

Yeah really. I have been told that a Motard wouldn't be fun. Have I been misled? I wouldn't mind VIR.

VIR is a fast track but I will guarantee you, you will have just as much, if not more fun on your Motard than you will on a sportbike. I had a grin from ear to ear when I was running my YZ450 down there
Just keep in mind on the front straight, you'll be wide open at pit in..with another half mile of track (maybe more? ) to go before you let off so the sportbikes are going by pretty fast.

I had the best time ever, of any trackday or race weekend while at VIR on the Motard, it was awesome!!

If you really want to make the bike run well do the following. Ive done a bunch of stuff (including everyhting on this list) to mine over the last 6 weeks and I think I will be very happy with the results.

1. cut a 3x3 (exactly) size whole on the top of your airbox.
2. replace the stock exhaust with a yosh rs3 or ti full system. Not a slip on, it does crap. The rs3 can be had on ebay for in the 3's, and new for 4 something.
3. remove the spark arrestor
4. make sure the kandn is in good shape and clean
5. pull the carb out and clean it. then swap the main jet and pilot jet and possibly the needle and clip positions and maybe the spring. If you email me your elevation and the mods you plan to have Ill get you the settings for the carb you need from TT forum, or you can ask yourself over there.
6. when jetting the carb replace the stock fuel screw with an adjustable one.

I can get you all the part #s and stuff from the TT store. It shouldnt cost you more than 500 for everything, and you can still do the fcr later if you want.

This is what everyone who has the bike and wants it to run well does. If you want the fcr, go for it, but be prepared to have to smooth out the gliches in the settings unless you feel confident you can sort through the TT threads on how to actually make it run well. Im sure the airbox mod is still required for the fcr carb.

Riding R7's YZ450 at VIR is what made me want a motard. For the 3-4 seconds you are bored on the front straight, the rest of the track is a blast.

I'll go buy the stock jets and show up at your place with the bike in the back of my truck. I'll bring beer.
