Deal’s Gap in Tennessee Tops Poll of Best Roads for Sport Riding

East Troy, WI -- (Thursday, July 18, 2002) Twisty roads make motorcyclists happy, and the riders of Buell motorcycles know exactly where to go to find a blissful stretch of highway. Buell Motorcycle Company recently published the results of a six-month poll conducted on its website, Buell.com, that asked riders around the country to name their favorite stretch of curves.

Topping the list is the infamous Deal’s Gap, a wildly twisting stretch of US Highway 129 that jams 318 turns into 12 miles of undulating pavement in the Smoky Mountain region between Maryville, Tenn., and Topoco, N.C.

The idea of the Buell Twisty Roads Poll came up when the company was developing its latest creation, the Buell Firebolt XB9R, a high-performance model featuring a host of technological innovations designed specifically to enhance its performance on challenging roads.

“As we were developing the Firebolt, we thought, where would be the best place to take this baby for a ride?,” said Erik Buell, chief technical officer and founder of the company. “It only made sense to offer riders some ideas about where to take the Firebolt and put it to the test, and these are some of the most exciting roads in the country.”

The final poll results name curvy roads in nearly every corner of the United States, such as Virginia’s Blue Ridge Parkway, Million Dollar Highway in Colorado and Angel’s Crest Highway in California. Each caters to riders seeking switchbacks and hairpin turns:

Buell Twisty Roads Poll Results

Deal’s Gap (US 129) –Known to motorcycle riders as “The Dragon,” it features 318 turns in 12 miles along one stretch between Maryville, Tenn., and Topoco, N.C.

Blue Ridge Parkway/Skyline Drive –Following the spine of the Smoky Mountains from Cherokee, NC to Shenadoah National Park in northern Virginia, this 469-mile National Park climbs to over 6,000 feet and is renowned for its magnificent views.

US 12 – The scenic stretch between Lolo, Mont., and Lewiston, Idaho, follows a route originally used by explorers Lewis & Clark.

Spearfish Canyon (US 85) – The stretch from Spearfish to Lead is a favorite while touring the Black Hills in South Dakota.

Angeles Crest Highway (California Highway 2) – A picturesque, undulating voyage on California Highway 2, and its side-roads, between Glendale and San Bernardino.

Wisconsin State Highway 35 – As it traces the path of the Mississippi River, few stretches of Midwestern pavement offer the beauty and curves you’ll find between Prescott and Pepin, Wis.

New Hampshire’s Kancamagus Highway (Highway 112) –Winds over New Hampshire’s White Mountain ridges and past waterfalls from Lincoln to Conway.

Oregon’s Green Springs Highway (Highway 66) – Three river crossings and a climb over 4,700-foot Hayden Mountain Summit highlight this stretch between Klamath Falls and Ashland.

Million Dollar Highway (US 550) –Named from the low-grade gold ore present in parts of its road bed, this high-altitude highway climbs to over 10,000-foot passes between Durango and Silverton in southwestern Colorado.

Arkansas Highway 7 – Winding from Harrison to Jasper on through the Ozark National Forest, this route is a Southern delicacy.

It's cool to see a NH road on there, but the K in the top 10?

Kinda sad. There's far better roads in NH, IMO. I think even 112 itself is better west of the Kanc section...

I agree, I am much more a fan of RT 2 west out towards the mass/new york border. I think that has it on the kanc all day long. Plus the alot of roads are freshly paved.

that's cuz, deep down inside, no matter how hard they fight it, all Buell owners are still riding Harleys.

it's a good thing that they don't know about the real good roads. More fun for us.

17 in VT is nice and smooth but it seems to be slippery regardless of the tires I'm using. They need some asphalt with more bite.

I get nervous on that road with cars coming in the other direction. So dam narrow, and then there is the youtube videos of WRX's.

But I suppose 17 has it's share of that as well.
