im a lurker here, but ive been chatting with killbill and he said to post up on here cuz a bunch of you guys are from or around lowell so here it goes...

i was at the intersection of riverside and university ave. on my bike at a red light. i was sittin in neutral and waiting for the light to change when a kid came up to me and asked "where the f$($ did you get that helmet"(as he reached over and shut my bike off my turning the key) i replied with what? and he asked again, i said parkway cycle in everett. he said u effin stole it from me you POS, i said no i did not im not a thief, i dont steal from fellow bikers. he wasnt buyin it, so i pulled ova to the side of the road and got off. i took off my helmet to talk to him, he said give me back my effin helmet before i effin kill you, i said guy i have a receipt for this i can get it, hes like u stole it from me i know where you live and have your plate. i said thats cool but i didnt steal it, so he continues to threaten me and demands the helmet. he demands to look at the liner to see if its glued because his was, i have a removable liner so he took it and ripped it out and said you POS this helmet cost me a grand(BS), and threw my key at me, hit me in the chest and took off in his buddies car, i got the plate and stuff and the cops are lookin into it, hopfully something comes out of this. anyways if anyone knows the kid, and sees it at bike night or something please let me know my AIM in dalarns7

Hopefully the police will take care of it. Seems pretty cut and dry to me. You should get the helmet back and file assault charges while you're at it.

What kind of helmet was it?

I had my helmet ripped off my bike while parked
in the Fenway about 2 months ago. Cable clipped.

My home owners insurance covered part of the cost of replacement.
Not sure if home owners or renter's insurance can help in
situation like yours.

I'm glad you posted this because frankly the thought of something like this happening has never even occurred to me. I hope you get your helmet back. Check ebay and craigslist in case he tries selling it.

I think I might get some kind of teather to attach my key to me so some one can't just walk up and grab it like what happened to you.

yeh, if i could go back in time and slow it down i would have handled it alot differently, i wouldnt have taken my helmet off, and would have called the cops, but shit happens i reacted how i reacted and cant change it, i guess you live and you learn, if i heard this story from someone else i woulda been sayin the same stuff ive been hearin, o i woulda kicked his ass and shit like that, but the reality is, the way you think you are gonna act in a situation usually is alot different then when it actually sneaks up on you out of no where

things were bad but didn't end with gun fire and a trip to the hospital / morgue and your bike didn't get jacked or crunched. i thought high end helmets were serial numbered???? still, it's a big wtf and was the subject of dinner conversation last night. question remains; helmet jack or legit mistake handled badly <very badly, but not by you.

could have been so much worse.
apparently there were a rash off bike jacks in nyc a few years ago; a tag team thing, grab key, get rider off the bike, ride off.

I'm glad you posted this up here. Good thinking not to play the "coulda, woulda" game. You know what they say about hindsight. People should be aware that his is happening. Especially for people like us who are riding in the Lowell area. I would not be surprised if you saw the kid and your helmet at the Lowell Bike night on the 22nd.

If you need to borrow a helmet let me know. I have a two year old HJC sittin at home collecting dust.

Since no one has said anything, if the popo do not do anything about this then you need to post up the kind of car, color and plate number. There are plenty of people here who can get the info needed to pay this person a visit or just keep an eye out for him!

I personally think you did the right thing by being passive, you have no idea what you were up against and sounds like you were by yourself. The helmet is replaceable!

Sounds to me like these guys were following you around waiting for you to stop. Once stopped one of them comes out steals your helmet and gets back into the car and takes off.

I'm not surpised this happened in Lowell. Lot of scum live in Lowell (no offense to anyone on this forum who lives there). A friend of mine unfortunately lives there at the moment and he tells me all the time how ghetto it is there.
