I'm looking to take a overnight ride up to the rt17 area of vt and back. Can anyone recommend a cheap campground in that area.

I usually stay at the hide-away inn. They have a decent bar/restaurant, and are priced reasonably.

Hyde Away Inn & Restaurant

When are you going? I want to go play too! (Plus, I can show you a double-secret road in the area that's 5x better than 17).

Highsider's back yard, which is 10 minutes from 17, is free, and comes with free food and beer.

Last time I went up there I shared a room with 2 others (had a Full bed and 2 bunks), came down to around $33 a person I think. Plus, it's right on rt17.

Camp Meade is also nearby, but you're looking at similar pricing. I believe a 2-bed cabin there is $80/night.
