Oil change questions

I am looking to change my oil on my 01' gsxr600. Any tutorials anywhere which I can view on how to change the oil on a bike. Done it on a car many times but not on a bike yet. Also thew bike has over 7k on it. what kind of oil should I use and also how many quarts does a bike take? Any help would be appreciated.

Oil change questions

One HUGE tips that's not on that page...

Take aluminum foil and cover your headers where the oils would drip on them and allow it to drip into the catch pan. When the oil is finished dripping, CAREFULLY remove the foil, so you don't get any on the pipes.

This prevents that really awful stink when you get the pipes hot after the oil change.

Here's an alternate atricle that explains what I'm talking about:

You probably need close to 4 quarts. Most bikes Ive seen hold just under 4 quarts with a filter change. As for what type of oil. Well thats like arguing politics. I run a 10w50 full syn oil in my bike. It just seems to be what works best out of the oils I have tried in my bike. Stay away from oils that have friction modifiers such as moly or say energy conserving. They can cause your clutch to slip if you have a wet clutch.

Around 4 quarts is the norm.

The oil debate goes on forever... I usually use Mobil 1 synthetic 15-50.

Sometimes Rotella or Spectro.

Oil change questions

Well I went to my local bike shop and got some oil and a new filter. changed everything and took it for a small drive. The engine seems to run a lot better and smoother but the shifting still seems a little off. I'm going to take it to the shop and have the guys there ride and see if they can see anything. I'll let ya guys know and thanks a messload for the help.

I just run regular dino 10w40 in my bike now. Doesnt seem to bother it one bit. Plus its about $30 cheaper than a full synthetic oil change.
