Squids in Indiana

I went to South Bend this weekend for the Notre Dame game and when I flew into O' Hare and drove to South Bend I saw at least 20+ sportbike riders with no helmets on going 70mph+ on the highway. I was shocked in three days I only saw 1 person with a helmet on all weekend, 1! Up here I see squids with no gear on but at least helmets, out there no gear at all. I'm sure there are bikers out there who DO wear their gear but I didn't see any. I mean some people don't want to wear leathers or jackets or gloves, etc...but come on a helmet I just thought it was common sense. I don't know guys I just dont get it.

The extra weight of a helmet increases the likelihood of certain neck injuries in a crash.

Yeah just got back from Florida and the same deal. I did talk to one guy who decided to bring, not wear, his helmet because it called for rain.

Well I just read a study saying that Oakley's are just as good as a helmet in preventing head injuries in collisions. So I guess those riders read this article way before I did.

I wouldn't go saying MA riders are any better than other states. the only reason most in ma wear helmets is because of the law. Just last week I watched two guys in shorts and sneaker (no shirts) wearing helmets until they got to the NH sign on 93 where they pulled over and took them off. Couldn't even go the 30 feet up to the rest area.

I completely agree I see riders all the time with just the standard T-shirt and jeans or t-shirt and khaki shorts on and the tennis sneaker. The best is the girl on the back with the wifebeater and the mathcin flip fliops.

This is a serious problem. I don't even know where to begin. I think it's high time we stopped sticking our heads in the ground like fucking ostriches. We come here and we make these posts on the interweb and we feel good about ourselves. But we really should be out on the streets where the action is. After all, these types of people (if I may be so bold as to include them in the human race) are out there every day on our streets projecting the image that we don't care about our heads. Where do they get off? How can we make them see the light? I've tried picketing at various busy intersections while wearing full gear but that didn't really get me anything but a few giggles and one frappuccino splattered on my leathers. I don't know where to turn now. Please help. Any ideas would be appreciated. Remember: there's no such thing as a stupid question.

Maybe hit them in the head with the picket sign as they ride by? This will help get through the message that you are truly concerned about their safety.

Like Ron White says, you cant fix stupid.

But, on the other hand, its their skin and life, not mine. As for the image problems, it shouldnt be a problem if you wear your gear. I personally choose to wear gear all the time, no matter the temperatures or anything. Like I say, I like having my skin attached to my body and not in a streak up 93, but if someone else would rather it that way, who am I to say otherwise.

Leathers are not that much better, Try telling the NH cop that you don't ride fast, while standing there in full leathers with knee pucks.. When it comes to helmets I believe Jay has it covered well.. (see sig line for further info)

i was in Indy this summer and I saw 95% HDs. seriously, i was straining to see something other than an HD. a few sportbikes here and there and 99% of not wearing lids. the only ones that were were riding either sports or goldwings.

I was just in South Bend for business and that place is DEAD! We got into South Bend last night at 11pm and it was a ghost town. It was a little better this morning when we left that crap shoot.

+1

South Bend is a dead place. Places like that just make me depressed and want to get back to New England, the east coast or somewhere with life in a HURRY. The only place I can say I like in the midwest is Chicago.
