I was thinking of just getting it cheap and replacing the pads.
are the snell 2000 and 2005 standards much of a difference?

Nope. Id never buy a used helmet. You dont know its history and its almost 8 years old. Cheap and helmet shouldnt be in the same sentence.

I wouldn't. The material that protects your head is not the pads, but the foam in the helmet. It essentially degrades over time and reduces its ability to protect your head. Anything over 5 y/o is considered not very good. Replacing the pads will not really do anything but help you not catch lice from the previous owner.

At VIR last week they said my helmet (arai) would not pass tech next time b/c it has a build sticker of 10/02. 5 years exactly......so, what do i do with it now? Do I still wear it? Dump it and buy a new one? Seems like a waste since it is in great condition etc....

I've done it. Won't know if it holds up until I wreck and land on my head. I never was a real strong believer in the whole "foam breaking down" thing. The quality is just too good to deteriorate so quickly. Probably that whole theory was started by Arai so you would buy more helmets anyway. ok.......let the flaming begin ...

Well think about it. Is the helmet good? Maybe depending on how you cared for it. I look at it like Id rather be sure its a good helmet and spend a little money then take the chance. Ive had my arai for 2 years now. Its in great condition but Im going to replace it this winter. Id rather spend the 600 on a helmet then take the chance.

well I've been going back and forth between the Shoei RF1000 Camber TC-3, and Arai Quantum-2 Stellar silver/black. I really want the Shoei, but they discontinued that color in 2007, and there's not many available (or at decient prices) that I'm finding. I see some of the Arai stellar online for around $400.
Almost bought the Shoei RF1000 GSX-R helmet, but too many people were saying how it is to have a Suzuki helmet.

I've got the same problem, my wonderful Arai has a build date of 9/02 and it's in perfect shape (just one scratch on the back). It had been sitting on a shelf for a year and a half at Brockton cycle center when I bought it new. Hate to turn it into a doorstop...

Like was mentioned the 5 year rule of thumb was implemented because the foam inside which gives the helmet its protection degrades over time, from sweat, moisture in general, other reasons. Just because the helmet LOOKS fine and has not been crashed does not mean the structure of the helmet is still 100%. The foam may not offer the same sort of protection. It then becomes your choice how much your head is worth. Obviously a year or two longer might not make a SIGNIFICANT difference, it just gives you a time frame when you should start thinking about the results.

well my HBC helmet was a $40 eBay purchase when I got the bike to last me the season, and I need to replace it. Since I'm hearing to save $$ (also from non-board members), you guys have any pros/cons on Arai vs Shoei ? The Shoei I really wanted is the same price as my 2nd choice Arai
