How hard is it to swap pistons in a bike engine?

No problems with my mota just wanna swap pistons to some high compression dealies since they are cheap and my bike gets the best HP numbers on 87 octane I could swap them on the cheap for a good bump in HP

I have never tore into am engine myself but ever new task I shoot for (mecanicly speeking) I do a good job at. Hell 6 years ago I didn't even know how an internal combustion engine even worked and now I could carry on a conversation about engines with most gear heads with out a problem. I love to learn and am not afraid to screw with my bike.

So is it easy enough to do my self or should I send it to a shop?

My other option with my engine is to shave the head and run a thinner head gasket, but if I do that I would have to use slotted cam gears to get the correct timing. That would bump me from 11.4:1 to about 13:1
The pistons would give me 13:1

So is it easier to pull the head (keep the engine in the frame) and work it then put it back in

Or pull the engine tear into the bottom end and swap pistons?

Hey Jon, seeing as how I'm the first D-B to chime in on this, I'll be nice for a change.

If it ain't broke don't fuck with it

You'd be sooooo much better served by changing sprockets ......the front down 1 tooth ( 15 to 14 ) and rear ( maybe up 1 or 2 teeth (44 to 45 or 46).... depends where the FZ makes good power) .

Or you could put a turbo on it and never have to crack the engine open

I'm pretty sure it's my pistons that are keeping my lap times slower than I'd like...

Ok with that said .... have you checked the FZ forums to find out if its possible without major head modifications

IF the FZ has a (horizontally) split cylinder bank from the lower cases you should be able to.... do it without crackin the lower end. You'd just take the eng out of the frame to give yourself enough room to work. remove the cylinder bank remove the wrist pin clips and drive the pin out ... put new piston on drive pin in and re clip finish re assembly ..stuff it back in it's home, change the jets, power up the Dyno and .... vua la / viola

For shit sake use 93 ya cheap bastid

Yeah i checked them CLICKY and got a few good responses.

I think I'm gonna go with shaving the head, seems easier and I'm a donkey so it might be more gooderer for me to take that route.

As for the octane. I used to use 93 ALL the time, last winter I put in a Holeshot Performance Products, Inc. stage II jet kind and it says in big bold letters USE 87 OCTANE since they dynoed several bikes with that kit on all different grades of gas and got the best numbers with 87. So if you use a higher octane than needed its like pissing up a rope, and thats why I want to bump my compression
