power commander (used)

Is it ok to buy a PC3 used that has already been on someone elses bike? i know the programmer for my truck it logs the VIN and once you plug it in, its "locked" to that vehical, and unless you restore the stock tune to the truck it wont work on another vehical. Is it the same for the PC3?

I've been shopping on eBay for a used PC3 for my GSX-R. Good question.

Re: power commander (used)

no, the PC3 doesn't care if it goes from one bike to the next ... but they are built bike specific (mostly wiring harness I believe)

Re: power commander (used)

alright, cool. Also does the PC3 need to be stock tune first before it can be installed? Ex. PC3 has custom map on it, can i just install it and be fine? reason i ask is, the guy is selling his exhaust and has a PC3 with a custom tune for that exhaust so i want to buy it as a package deal.

Yep, the tune 'should' stay with it. You should always keep a backup of the tune file on CD anyway. The power commander can be reset sometimes (voltage spike etc). Ask him for a copy of the tune file on CD or at least back it up as soon as you get the PC3

derek

most maps are free downloads on dynojet's website, unless you need a custom map

Re: power commander (used)

Sax is right... you should check about the harness.
You could waste alot of time trying to jury rig it
when it might be better to spend the extra money to get the right one.

About the maps...
What you do is have the unit zero-ed out before you
start it up the first time.

The zero map is essentially the bike with stock settings.
You will need a Windoze PC with Power Commander Software and
the USB cable that comes with the unit.
From there you can download various maps and
upload them to your PC3. Or get it custom mapped.

Yes, but the free ones are written for the average motor for that bike in the average conditions and take no account of altitude, average air temperature, fuel etc etc. You are always best getting a custom tune.

It's best if you have a laptop you can bring over to the bike. There is a way to run the software from a palm though I believe.

Re: power commander (used)

you'd be surprised. i used my PIII 600MHz laptop, and it ran fine. maps are like 200kb i think. the DynoJet app is around 40MB to download, but you could download it to a USB stick then install on your laptop.

Re: power commander (used)

the app and the map need to be on the laptop to send the map to the PC3.

now just look for a PC3 USB for a 02 GSX-R 600 :

It can be done with a PC but you'll have to lug the hard drive out to the PCIII to load the maps, hence the laptop.

Talk to TLRman. He's got a computer in his brother's garage that he uses to tune people's PC's for them. And with rte 128 RIGHT THERE, he's got a nice little "drag strip" to test it on, too
