I don't know, but I have seen prices double in five years of racing...

Everything is getting more expensive. Do you think rate cuts are free?

People need to start paying attention to what the central bank is doing: bailing out the stock market at the expense of the dollar. You and I are now paying for the stupid people/companies who overextended themselves in the housing bubble.

Tires are made using mostly carbon black, which comes from petro. My company stock dropped considerably due to upper managment not accounting for increased carbon black costs. I wouldnt be surprised to see the end user pay for it in the end, though I have no concrete information.

Re: Are bike tire prices going up by 20% in Feb?

I know virtually nothing of economics, but I can almost guarantee that prices of tires will go up next year. Why? Inflation. For whatever reason, they always find a reason to raise prices on virtually everything a person can buy. Possibly due to oil prices, and possibly due to the value o the dollar, among other things. Point being, don;t think you can race this year for exactly the same cost as last year unless you make some adjustments to your own expenditures.

FYI, this is not a rant about the US dollar or any other governmental/economic anything, just an observation of many years in retail, and a good chunk of living.

Everything gets more expensive as time goes on.

Retail tire prices ARE NOT going to increase by 20% during the course of a 29 day time period.

And in your many years of retail, the fed has never cut rates 1.25 points in a nine day period. In fact, to my knowledge they've never done that, ever, in the history of the fed.

But they did. They're making history, and noone is the wiser because the public doesn't follow these things. But for those who do, it's pretty damn scary.

Michelin is 5%-8% depending on the tire. Which is about average each year.

Motul just told us to expect 10%. This was larger than we expected.

Re: Are bike tire prices going up by 20% in Feb?

Michelin was no surprise. It goes up no matter what.

The Motul was, since it was so high. Talking to Dave at Motul, the rise is not so much crude as it is the additive package that each oil they make requires. Only a few companies make the additives, and the bike industry is so small compared to four wheel that they just don't have the volume needed to get better pricing.

Re: Are bike tire prices going up by 20% in Feb?

historicly, tire costs go down, while the initial cost of a tire may go up, tire technology give you more miles

a hundred years ago, in 1908 a cotton cord tire for your winfield flier cost about $12 but only lasted 500 miles, today a common car tire costs $65 but lasts 80,000 miles which tire is cheaper

when I first bought my SV650 in 1999, a good sport touring tire lasted 6000 miles at best, today, there are good sport touring tires that last twice as many miles and give you better traction
