Left over oil after the oil changeI have a bunch of half quarts left over from oil changes, do you guys ever use them for anything or alway just throw them out. Also I found out that when doing an oil change you need to change the crush washer, thus the reason my plug fell out the other day. I assume everyone else is aware of this, but if your not, begin changing your crush washer. |

I've used the same crush washer on my FZ1 for 35,000+ miles with no issues...same thing with my cars/ trucks, etc....never replaced a crush washer and still no issues in the years I've been wrenching. I'll go ahead and say it--> I've never lost an oil plug. |

Re: Left over oil after the oil changeI was thinking about that, thus the question. I wasn't sure if once opened it had some kind expiration. What if I were to mix two types of fully synthetic, like Mobil 1 4t and Honda hp4? |

Re: Left over oil after the oil changeIts not like uncovered brake fluid, its not going to draw in moisture. save and use or beat your bike hard religiously, you'll get some blow by and need to add some every 700-1,ooo miles - and when you say "throw away" I hope you mean recycle |

Re: Left over oil after the oil changewell, I've never actually thrown any away thus the reason I have them. But yes if i were to get rid of them, recycling would be my choice. |

Part dino, part syn. Not sure about mixing different synthetics... but I can't imagine that it would do anything that bad. Maybe just blow up your engine ! ![]() |

Re: Left over oil after the oil changeI wouldn't mix viscosities. All kidding aside, in my line of work, lubrication is key. The machines I work on require greases and/ or oils of all types and have specific applications for each type of lubricant. If you're looking for honest opinions then keep the oil brands and viscosities in their individual containers and don't mix them. Get more of the same exact stuff, but don't mix anything that's different, be it the label or weight. My .02 |

Re: Left over oil after the oil changeI might be wrong but I think crush washers also guard against cracking your oil pan to some degree. An old crush washer which has been flattened from repeated use might allow the drain bolt to enter the threads of the oil pan too deep. Properly torquing probably goes a long way to preventing this. |

Re: Left over oil after the oil changeBergs, your doomed now...LOL I'm with you, I have never replaced a crush washer unless it looks horrible and I have a leak. |

Re: Left over oil after the oil changeThe crush washer is there to act as a seal. When you torque the plug down, it "crushes" the washer and seals. I suppose it also helps keep the plug tight. The washer is so cheap, why not replace it? Honestly, your dealer is a little shitty if they don't offer it when you get a filter. For the $.50 why chance it?? As for the oil, I save them and reuse. Heck, I started using syn in the lawn mower for that very reason. You paid for it, use it in something! |

50%10w40 mixed with 50% 15w50 = 12.5w45 . What's the problem? You can mix viscosities, and as long as the oil is of the right grade, mix manufacturers too. Don't mix synthetic and non-synthetic. |

Re: Left over oil after the oil changeI bring all my used oil to autozone. They take it no questions asked. I've also heard WalMart will take it. I've been told that if a store sells oil it legally has to take used oil back for recycling. Whether or not that's true is another story... |

Re: Left over oil after the oil changeI'm not talking about the used oil obviously I know to recycle that, I'm talking about the new oil that I don't put in the bike because it will only require 2.5-2.8 qts. |

Re: Left over oil after the oil changeyea i usually buy the gallon and am left with about 1/5 of it afterwards every time. i've always kept it to top off or whatever. then if any is left it's the first to go in the bike on the next oil change. i really can't think of any prectical reason that the oil would go bad over a few month's time. or maybe even a few years. +1 to the crush washer too. it's there to act as a seal, not a lock washer. i've never changed mine in the 4 years I've had my bike. never. not once. probably should though.... if you're worried about the bolt coming out again (I would be), safety-wire it on there. |

Re: Left over oil after the oil changeQuote:
Depending on the type of lubricant, there are high as well as low pressure additives along with temperature sensitive additives that aid in proper lubrication performance of a given oil or grease. I take what I've learned from the machines I service at work and apply that knowledge to the machines I service at home. |

Re: Left over oil after the oil changeI change my oil at the local reservoir. 1. The ride there is decent so it turns into a nice cruse. 2. Easy disposal but you get alot of gawking by passerbyers. 3. I save a trip to the fish market as I wait for fish to float to the surface. Free dinner. I use a telescoptic net to grab them. I carry extra crush washers so if I ever have a leak at the pan, I have one ready. |

Re: Left over oil after the oil changeif your worried about mixing and matching, you can always save it for your winter oil change. Dump it in for winter, then change it in the spring. |
