R1 throttle mod

read this on GSX-R forums about using an R1 throttle. I know it's a 1/5 turn as opposed to the stock 1/4 turn, but who here has done this on their bike?
is it as quick and easy as it sounds, and was it worth it?

Re: R1 throttle mod

i just installed an R6 throttle tube on my SV650S, so it wouldn't be particularly surprising that the R6's bigger brother's tube fits the SV's older cousin....

made a significant difference, and cleaned up a decent amount of throttle slop -- throttle blips are now telepathic and matching revs on the downshift is 99% smooth as perfection

Re: R1 throttle mod

I looked into this when I had my 600. If I remember right, people were buying these from dealerships for like 12 bux. I remember it as being a cheap mod.

Re: R1 throttle mod

hahaha, i ordered mine from ronayers for a whopping $7.38, i believe. shipping took a while, but that's customary for RA -- cheaper for the product, but longer wait to get it (fine in the winter/off-season, but YMMV for when it's riding weather).

no guarantees about whether or not it'll work on the gsxr, though. i'd try and find a write-up on one of the forums -- chances are if it can be done, there's instructions or a how-to guide somewhere online...

the SV one was i think an 03 R6 tube that you had to cut a tiny tiny bit off, just so that the tube could return to closed throttle (otherwise it'd close to like 5 or 10%). just google canyonchasers and go to the workshop (for the SV one).

after that, the install took 10min or so, from unscrewing the first screw to firing her up and seeing how she worked. my throttle cables had become a little stretched with the stock tube, so i didn't need to take off my fairings to add some length to the cable (which you may or may not need to do, if the swap is possible). i'm pretty noobish at doing mods, though, so if i can do it in that time, chances are you can too.

i took the stock one off, lined up the two tubes, matched the tabs, and dremeled off probably 1/8" to ensure it would close all the way.

Re: R1 throttle mod

Ok, well I should have asked about 1/5 turns instead of the stock 1/4 turn throttle

not for speed. i hear it makes the throttle response much smoother, and the obvious shorter turn improvement

Re: R1 throttle mod

you have a 1000 right?

how long can you hold the throttle wide open before you're doing, say a buck 30? lol

i've got my new throttle sitting in my room waiting to go on. similar to the R1 mod, but it's a triumph tube, and already comes with a matching grip. less then 5 minutes to install and $15 shipped i think from bikebandit. so yeah... why the hell not, eh?

not going with a 1000 for a 1st bike. when people walk up and ask if my bike it a 1000, i usually tell them it's a 250

Re: R1 throttle mod

A few points here:

A 1/5 turn throttle will make the stop to stop distance on your throttle closer.

What it won't do:

It won't give you any smoother or faster acceleration.
It won't smooth out a power curve or fix on-off throttle transition problems.
It won't magically make your throttle cables less sloppy (that was pure chance and they must have been maladjusted before).

If you feel that you have mastered the ability to fully control a throttle on corner exit (ratchet method) then by all means go to a 1/5 turn throttle. if you haven't got very good throttle control already, then a 1/5 turn throttle is a highside waiting to happen.

Anyone tried a 1/6 turn throttle yet?

so is peing your pants, right?

before this gets , people who know me or have seen my new parts list, know that I'm not into making the bike faster. just want it to run better and smoother.

Re: R1 throttle mod

There is a company in england that makes a valve that acts as a slipper clutch give me a little bit and ill post it up. It supposedly uses the engine back pressure to eliminate the jerkyness of on and off throttle.
