HELP last minute questions about bike im buying!

Hey, so i maybe going to buy a used zx6r and i need some last minute advice on whether or not I should get it or if i need to check and last minute things.

its an 02 zx6r with 6900 miles on it, its got one nice minor dent, and some scratches but the title is clean. I am paying $3000 for it. I took it for a spin recently and everything seemed find and it didnt make any wierd noises or anything, but i still dont know how much play is supposed to be in the throttle for this bike. Like i didnt get imediate response from the throttle when i turned it , i dont know if it was like 3/4 of an inch or an inch that i turned it until i got some power. So I was wondering if thats normal or if i should be checking anything...I really need some quick answers , plus the fact that i may be picking it up this coming saturday as in 5/3/08. HELP MEEE

if you're talking about getting the engine rpm to increase while in neutral (or taking off from a stop), and you had to rotate the grip 3/4"-1", then it sounds like the throttle cable needs adjustment.

if you're talking about while on the go, you have to rotate the grip a lot to get it to accelerate at brisk pace, then that's probably because it's a 600 and you aren't in the powerband.

just my $.02

Throttle response can be adjusted by tightening the throttle cable... so I think you're barking up the wrong tree as far as 'looking for problems' goes...

I've always been told to look at the frame of the bike (for dents/scrathes/cracks), look to see how the sprocket is worn down (if it's even, and not particularly worn on one side), if the forks are leaking, and typical things like tire wear, chain play (and condition). Check the oil for anything funky (metal shavings, etc), turn the bike on and let it run up to temp and see if it stabilizes, and then the typical cosmetics.

The frame is the important thing to look at. If it's bent, cracked, or rashed up, it's totalled. You can't fix a frame without major work, and a cracked/bent frame is DANGEROUS. It's a no go as far as I'm concerned, unless you buy it totalled, straighten it, and then track the balls out of it

Good luck!! And hello!

Re: HELP last minute questions about bike im buying!

nice meeting ya'll and thanks. I did look at the exterior and like i said there was a dent on the left side bottom faring but its nothing serious and right behind the seat there is some rash looks like there was helmet hanging off the back or something and scraped off the back or something, again nothing serious. as for the chain, it seemed a little gunky if that word can be used, kind of like thick oil. Can i just lube that up and clean it or would i need to change the whole thing. Also I was wondering if I should also make him take it to pass inspection before i buy it, or is that too forward of me. I dont really know how much that costs to get it inspected around here.

Not sure where you are, but in MA, legally you're supposed to get the inspection sticker after buying it, the sticker isn't supposed to transfer with the bike.

You could have a pre-purchase inspection done by a mechanic, on your dime. Obviously you'd have to ask the seller to bring the bike over to the shop for you.

The throttle play is nothing it can be adjusted. Like the others have said I would look very hard at the frame. Good luck.

IIRC, 2002 ZX6R is carburetted. Might need some carb tuning (sync., adjustments etc.), esp if it had been sitting for a while.
